- Description:
- Printed on negative envelope: "Hurt Park at night (used 7/14/63), The Cover: Shifting colored lights shine on the many jets of water gushing from the fountain in Atlanta's Hurt Park and produce varied effects. At night the Hurt Building provides an impressive backdrop for the sparkling fountain. For 75 years after the Civil War Atlanta had no downtown park. In 1938 Mayor William B. Hartsfield proposed the creation of a park on the triangle in front of the Municipal Auditorium. Two years later Hurt Park was dedicated; it was named for prominent Atlanta builder Joel I. Hurt who had died in 1938. The electric fountain, a gift to the City of Atlanta by the Emily and Ernest Woodruff Foundation, was presented by Thomas K. Glenn, then chairman of the board of trustees of the foundation. The downtown park has been a favorite spot of many dating couples, but it has been the setting for only one marriage ceremony - the most spectacular public wedding in Atlanta's history.
