- Description:
- Hosted by Robbyn Fuller. Segment one: Arts on the River, 0:00-3:38. Civic Magazine covers Savannah's annual Arts on the River festival held each May. The festival showcases local art of all kinds, and has expanded from the riverfront to other areas of Savannah as well. A celebration of visual art as well as music and dancing, it brings Savannah's artists to the forefront. A classical orchestral concert is featured, as well as a brass band and art exhibitions. Segment two: All American City, 3:38-8:33. Civic Magazine highlights Savannah's various programs to increase quality of life in the city. In order to combat crime, the Savannah Police Department is striving to build more positive relationships with the community so that residents will welcome, and not fear, police. The Showcase Neighborhood Program, beginning in 1986, aimed to increase citizen involvement in fixing neighborhood problems. Later, a citywide program called Vision 20/20 tried to bring these strategies to all of Savannah. The Crime Control Collaborative was formed to integrate strategies throughout Savannah's criminal justice organizations. The programs seem to be working, as crime in Savannah has seen a large drop since their implementation. Interviewees include Steering Committee member John McCullough, and Thomas Square neighborhood resident Louise Hunter-Smith. Segment three: Grants for Blocks Award Ceremony, 8:33-1530. Civic Magazine covers the second annual Grants for Blocks Award Ceremony at the Savannah Civic Center, which recognized recipients of community block grants in target areas to improve neighborhoods. Interviewees and speakers at the award ceremony include Assistant City Manager Henry Moore, Steering Committee member Sadie Brown, Savannah resident Pamela Jones, Alderman at Large Floyd Adams, Jr., and Mayor Susan Weiner. Segment four: Adopt a Stop, 15:30-21:19. Civic Magazine covers a ceremony thanking those who made an effort to clean up downtown bus stops as part of the Adopt a Stop program. Interviewees and speakers at the ceremony include Savannah resident Buddy Patterson, Savannah Development and Renewal Authority Executive Director Peter Armato, and Alderman at Large Dana Braun.
