- Description:
- Hosted by Charlesetta Bisard. Segment one: City Government Essay Contest, 0:00-21:17. Civic Magazine covers the question posed to local 6th grade students, who were asked to answer: "If I were mayor I would..." as part of the first city government essay contest. Over 150 students took advantage of the opportunity to share their thoughts and entered essays into the contest. Sixteen students were chosen as finalists and invited to a dinner hosted by Mayor Floyd Adams, Jr, where the winner of the contest was announced. Mrs. Deborah Adams served as Master of Ceremonies for the dinner, and Mayor Adams thanked all of the people who made the contest possible and congratulated all of the contest entrants and finalists. All of the finalists are called up to receive certificates, followed by awards for the first, second, and third place winner, who receive prices. Third place went to Umar Saulat, second to Eric Bacon, and first place to Nina Mosley; the top three winners all read their essays aloud. Cathy Cooper Long of the Public Information Office (PIO) thanks all of the children and adults who made the contest possible and announced the PIO essay winner pick, Amy Vogelsang, who read her essay aloud. Segment two: Tree planting ceremony for Victory over violence, 21:17-36:26. Civic Magazine covers a ceremony for the planting of a Southern Oak tree as part of Savannah's Victory Over Violence campaign to alleviate violence in the city. Speakers at the ceremony include City Manager Michael Brown, Janice James of the Keep Savannah Beautiful campaign, state representative Lester G. Jackson III, Heather Leo from Keep Georgia Beautiful, John Finney from the Equal Opportunity Authority, Alderman at Large Pete Liakakis, and Fred Tinkle, Chairman of the Park and Tree Commission.
