LaGRANGE COLLEGE
1948 Quadrangle
LaGrange College is happy to be old basking in the pride of offering 138 years
of quality education as Georgia's oldest independent college. But being old isn't
enoughfor LaGrange. It keeps adding and improving facilities and curriculum so it's
graduates will always have a "Margin of Distinction".
Growth has been steady as LaGrange emerged from a girls' school in the early
fifties to become a four-year, Methodist-affiliated, co-ed college offering 20 majors
which lead to a Bachelor of Arts degree. The College has always had the objective of
developing the total person. Its students receive excellent liberal arts educations, with a
faculty-student ratio of one to thirteen. Exciting dimensions for extra-curricular
activities are available in student government, campus publications, honor societies,
intercollegiage and intramural sports, dramatics, music, arts, sororities, and fraternities.
Now 600 students study on the campus which is enhanced by the small-town
friendliness of LaGrange and stimulated by the proximity of bustling Atlanta, only 70
miles away.
A nine million dollar expansion program over the next nine years will double the
size of the faculty, provide more classrooms, dormitories, a Fine Arts building and
auditorium, library books and the latest teaching aids and equipment. With the help of
those who believe young people deserve quality education, LatGrange will reach its
financial goal and by 1978 will be serving 1,000 students.
As old as 1831 as new as tomorrow. That's the combination that gives LaGrange
College a "Margin of Distinction".
- 1970 Quadrangle
The charm of the old is happily blended with the challenge of the new in
an atmosphere of Christian culture at LaGrange College; with modern and
comfortable reisdence halls, excellent courses in domestic, commercial, and
fine arts, and a standard curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree.
Expenses moderate.

Elsies Travelogue
Each year Elsie sits down at her desk, gazes out the window, and chews
thoughtfully on her pencil. She smiles as she records events of the year for
the Quadrangle, or her face bears a pensive expression as she puts her piloso-
phy of Life into words for the Scroll. That same smile will probably cross
Grandmother Elsie's face as she turns the pages of these publications in
reminiscence and a far-away look will come into her eyes as she ponders
what the intervening years have done to her girlhood philosophy.
- from the 1948 Quadrangle
For many years the Jills have come
To get an education;
But now the welcome mat is spread.
And in this situation
Have come the Jacks who've made their place
Among the working Jills;
And now the two can work and play
Atop the L.C. "Hill."

Such traditions as Rat Day, Turkey-picking, the
Junior-Freshman wedding, and the Sophomore-
Senior Banquet strengthen the bond of fellowship
between the Senior-Sophomore, and Junior-Fresh-
man classes. Out of the friendship formed by the
selection of "little sisters" from these classes comes
the bridesmaids and godmothers.

COLLEGE LIFE
This is the 1982 Quadrangle. It is
a menagerie of images and memories
put together at the end of the 151st year
of La Grange College. It is my sincere
hope that you will enjoy experiencing
these pages as much as I have enjoyed
creating them for you.

A Significant Sequicentennial
We celebrate 150 years of service by LaGrange College for several good
reasons:
1. It was the first school for women chartered by the State of Georgia
(December 26, 1831)
2. The only schools in the state offering education to young men at the
same time were the University of Georgia and the Medical College of
Georgia.
3. It remained in operation throughout the Civil War. Its doors have never
closed.
4. Its first bachelor's degree was conferred in 1946.
5. As early as 1881-1882 the Master of Arts degree was offered for two
years of study after the Bachelor of Arts degree had been conferred.
6. The College was a private school until sold as the LaGrange Female
College to the Georgia Conference of the Methodist Church in 1856.
7. In Gone With the Wind, Margaret Mitchell told that Aunt Pittypat and
her friend, Miss Tomlinson, attended LaGrange.
8. In 1953, after 122 years as a school for young women, LaGrange College
became coeducational, and is today one of the stronger liberal arts
colleges in the Southeast.
9. As a part of its offerings to enhance career and professional education
the College emphasizes the fine arts.

1. The photograph appeared in the
1958 Quadrangle. The swim team
often held meets at nearby pools.
The audience is more captiavated by
the camera, though, than by the
display of aquatic agility performed
by the girls in the background.
Remember we were La Grange
Female Academy then.
2. This contrasting between plaid
and print appeared in the 1975
yearbook. It was a scene from
sorority rush activities from that
year. We cropped out the punch
bowl, but that doesn't mean that the
party was too dull.
3. Super Suds provided a good wash
for these girls washing in the most
modern automated washing ma-
chines available to residents who
lived on the Hill. This photo is taken
from the 1948 yearbook.
4. In 1973 there was a great emphasis
on student involvement in politics
and voting. Pi Kappa Phi and Kappa
Delta pulled together to erect
this pro-political display on the
campus. Note the concern for
humanity shown here.
5. This scene was taken from the
Executive Council of the Student
Government Association picture that
appeared in the 1972 Quadrangle.
McEntire and Nail (only last names
were in the caption) express the
sentiment of that day.

HOMECOMING '82
JANE WHEELER
CROWNED QUEEN
On the weekend of
November 6-8, 1981, LaGrange
College celebrated its
one-hundred and fiftieth
birthday with a sesquicentennial
Homecoming celebration.
Festivities began with the
dedication of the Fuller E.
Callaway Student Center on
Friday. On Saturday, in lieu of
the customary parade,
organizations participated in a
display competition. Afterwards,
students and visitors were
treated to a medley of songs by
the LaGrange College
Choralaires. Later, students and
visitors were invited to sample
the birthday cake, tour the
archives rooms, and view the
college quilt which presented in
needlework form the history of
LC.
Other highlights of the
weekend included the Peter Pan
matinee, class reunions, a basket-
ball fame and dance, and the
traditional crowning of the
Homecoming Queen who was
Miss Jane Wheeler. There were,
however, a few disappointments.
The scheduled air balloon rides
never managed to get off the
ground, but the cafeteria cooled
hot tempers with blocks of ice
molded into the shape of the
numbers 150. Happy birthday,
LC!

After days of anxiously watch-
ing the slate-grey winter sky, our
efforts were finally rewarded. It
Snowed! At first the flakes were
powdered sugar sifting gently down,
then they became dancing, whirling
spirits furiously racing each other to
the ground. The Hill underwent a
miraculous, overnight transforma-
tion. Those same students who had
insisted that the terrain was too
treacherous to allow passage to class
dashed to the cafeteria, emerging
with trays upon which to slide down
those very hills. Shouts filled the air
almost as thickly as snowballs did,
and snowmen, as well as a few
snowwomen, sprouted from the
most unexpected places.
With classes cancelled for three
days, inhabitants of the residence
halls enjoyed a brief, frosty vaca-
tion. Scarves, boots, hats, overcoats,
all appeared self-propelled as
co-eds bundled up against the chill.
The icy fun was short lived,
however. Within a few days the sun
was out in all its glory, melting the
white wonderland and leaving only
sniffles and glowing red noses to
remind us that it had indeed
snowed.

CALLAWAY CENTER DEDICATED
On November 7, 1981, La-
Grange College students, faculty,
and alumni gathered for the dedica-
tion of the college's new multi-
million dollar student center. The
Center, named Fuller E. Callaway
Student Center, is built on the site
of the Dobbs Building which was
built in 1851 and destroyed by fire
in 1970. Contemporary in function,
the new building has the aesthetic
feeling and traditional appearance
of the old Dobbs Building.
The new Center is named for
the late Fuller Earl Callaway, Sr.,
whose rise to world renowned
textile executive from farm boy
earned him a position as one of the
great builders of American industry.
Mr. Callaway's son, Dr. Fuller E.
Callaway, Jr., gave the address
honoring his father at the dedica-
tion ceremony. He presented to the
audience gathered on the Quadran-
gle a list of principles that char-
acterized his father, describing him
as different from most men.
Following Dr. Callaway's
address, a Litany of Dedication was
given, and a dedicatory prayer
offered for the new building. At the
close of the formal dedication
ceremony, the building was opening
for public viewing. Visitors were
able to conduct a room to room
inspection of the facility which was
soon to become an integral part of
life at LC. These include adminis-
trative offices, student government
and publications rooms, a bookstore
and campus post office, game room,
and large ballroom.

The Women's Athletic As-
sociation sponsored women's intra-
mural sports for interested teams.
Sororities and Indies teams were
formed to compete in such activi-
ties as volleyball, softball, and
basketball. The girls worked hard
in practices to perfect their athletic
abilities. As a result, they per-
formed well in all their games.
Observers looked on as intra-
mural participants exhibited their
talents in their chosen sports.
Quick thinking and fast action
characterized the games as the LC
ladies devoted all their energies to
athletic endeavors. Although they
were involved in some stiff
competition, the girls upheld the
principles of good sportsmanship.
As they left the courts or fields, it
was evident that their competition
was all in the spirit of friendly fun.

LaGrange College Theatre '82
Season
V
I
Starting the '82 season of the performing arts at
LaGrange College was the production of Peter Pah
directed by Assistant Professor of Speech and Drama,
Don Elwell. Cathy Fields played the title role. The
production was also used for the Children's Theatre
course offered in the department as a means of
introducing students to the role of the theatre arts in the
elementary school. The musical tribute to the institution
of marrige, / Do, I Do, followed with Marc McPherson
and Kendra Tucker as the happy couple. William
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet provided a contrast to
the lighthearted previous productions, with Ken
Johnston and Amy J. Miller portraying the title
characters. The season ended with the Rodgers and
Hammerstein musical Oklahoma!, directed by Dr. Max
Estes, with Greg Jasinski as Curly, Lori Medlock as
Laurey, Jay Reynolds as Will Parker, Carol Howington
as Ado Annie, and Les Howell as Ali Hakim.

DODD CENTER DEDICATED
On Saturday, April 17, 1982, LaGrange College
dedicated the Lamar Dodd Art Center in
appreciation of the achievements of one of her
foremost alumni, Dr. Lamar Dodd. The multi-
million dollar structure houses a permanent
collection of paintings that Dr. Dodd has placed on
permanent loan to the college. It also houses the art
department with ample space for photography,
weaving, casting, pottery, drawing, and other areas
students may be interested in. The small shower that
fell on the crowd gathered to hear the dedicatory
address did not dampen the spirits of a most
supportive group of faculty, students, and friends of
D. Griffin
LC. It will stand as a memorial to the achievements
of Lamar Dodd and serve as an encouragement for
prospective artists to work toward.

ADMINISTRATION
& FACULTY
1. This photo of Sam Hornsby
appeared in the 1972 Quadrangle.
They departments were photo-
graphed all together. This procedure
was quite impossible for this edition
since in 1972 there was no threat of
nuclear holocaust at any moment.
2. Mr. Thomas Divan had this photo
appear in the 1975 faculty section.
His title was Cultural Outreach
Program Director. He later became
associate professor of Speech and
Drama. He left LaGrange at the end
of the '81 school year to finish up his
doctoral degree at New York
University.
3. Dr. Zachary Taylor appeared in
the 1973 yearbook in this photo. He
currently teaches in the Business
Department. He has been on the
faculty at LaGrange for a number of
years, and gains and loses his beard
from yearbook to yearbook.
4. Hubert T. Quillian inserted a
small message in the 1948
Quadrangle following this portrait of
himself. It read, "May I express my
deep appreciation of your spirit of
fine friendliness and great faith. My
hope for you is that through the
years the charm, the challenge, and
the responsibility of life will bring
enduring satisfaction."
5. Emmett Crenshaw was the
Campus Policeman in the year 1958.
It is not certain if he did or did not
start all the ghost stories going
around about Smith.

ADS
1. This advertisement for Valcan
Materials Company appeared in the
1975 Quadrangle. Apparently the
affect of the drastic change in the
music collegiates were listening to
was capitalized on by the ad
industry, and makes for an eye-
catching advertisement for a not so
common company.
2. People have devoted their lives to
the collection of Coca-Cola memor-
abilia, and there is no more perfect
mirror of American tastes and
attitudes than the ads this soft drink
empire has bombarded the public
with. It has become the universal
drink. This ad is from 1948.
3. Here is the universal soft drink in
an ad 24 years later. It appeared in
the 1972 Quadrangle and again
reflects the concerns of the all-
American collegiate ideal.
4. When the Victrola was invented,
Edison probably had no idea the
technology that would improve his
invention. This ad has become a
valuable collector's item when
found in its original form. That little
dog has been curious to know
exactly how that contraption works
for years.
5. This picture opened the ad section
in the 1958 yearbook. If only all
those autos could be assembled
together again for an after photo.
Some of the names of businesses
have changed, but the buildings
remain unchanged in downtown
LaGrange.
