There is a mystery in human hearts,
And though we be encircled by a host
Of those who love us well and are beloved,
To every one of us, from time to time,
There comes a sense of utter loneliness.

Strange, when you come to think of it,
that of all the countless folk who have
lived before our time on this planet
not one is known in history or in legend
as having died of laughter.

Max Beerbohm

Courtship consists in a number of quiet
attentions not so pointed as to alarm,
nor so vague as not to be understood.

Though nothing can bring back the
hour

Of splender in the grass, or glory in

the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength is what remains behind.

No one can escape the theatre, whether he be actively engaged in it or not, for in
its multitude of forms it touches every human life, directly or indirectly. Often-
times it serves simply to entertain us; at other times it may also enlighten and en-
rich our understanding of the human heart. In its highest form it brings us every
now and then that rare and precious gift of exaltation. It is the oldest and most
universal of our arts.

NDUSTRIES

ARE CITIZENS, TOO!

In a free America, industries are citizens, too. And the
manner in which industrial citizenship is exercised has a lot
to do with maintaining our freedom.

At Callaway Mills, good industrial citizenship practices are
as much a part of the day-to-day operation as the endless flow
of fabric from our looms. We believe that the practice of good
citizenship calls for going "above and beyond" what the law
requires. There is no law, for example, that makes us maintain
such facilities as Coleman Library, Callaway Auditorium and
the Callaway Educational Center Pool for everyone to use and
enjoy. These are just some of the things that fall into the
"above and beyond" category.

And Callaway, like other industries, is a taxpayer. In fact,
our current schedule calls for the preparation of 354 separate
tax returns each year! A lot of trouble and a lot of money?
You bet ! But it's the price we pay for the liberties all Ameri-
can citizens enjoy.

Yearbooks are funny things. To you, the reader, it's one hun-
dred and ninety-two pages of pictures and writing, telling about
what happened this year. But to the staff, especially the ones that
stuck it out to the end, it's a mass of headaches, long hours, late dead-
lines, stale cigarettes, and rotten coffee.

A yearbook is a group of experiences ... to laugh about after
the final page is written. Behind the beauty section is Jean Jackson,
slightly injured, after she fell through the porch of the old mansion
where the pictures were taken. Then there's Ellen Bennett, who sacri-
ficed five hours of French credit for our book, who looked up a few
days before the second deadline to ask: "Do we have any class
officers?"

A yearbook is dealing with people. Our sincere thanks to Har-
rell Brooks and his hot rod Thunderbird for coming to our rescue
so many times. Thanks to our advisors, Dr. Williams and Mrs. Blod-
gett. Thanks to the photographers, the girls that drew the layouts,
the typists, and The Hilltop News for putting up with the noise.

A yearbook is a most rewarding experience. Here is a chance to
put a little of yourself into capturing the events of a year. I'm thank-
ful for the opportunity of recording one year, and I'm sure the rest
of the staff is too. I hope that we have given you something to en-
hance your memories of LaGrange College, for that is the purpose of
the Quadrangle.
