ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF
LA GRANGE COLLEGE
LA GRANGE, GEORGIA

To the L. C. girl whose design for
living is the code of good sports-
manship, fair play, dependability,
clear-mindedness, originality, co-
operation we, the students of
LaGrange College, dedicate this
volume of the QUADRANGLE.

THE L. C. GIRL

She is made up of beauty and courage and charm;

Her soul is a steadfast flame;
Her heart is a hearth-fire, generous, warm,

And all life to her is a game;
And just as she plays it her school-days through,

Undaunted by doubts and fears,
So she stands honorable, valiant, and true

Facing the game of the years.

Ever has L C. displayed a spirit of gallantry.
Evolving from an era which was unfavorable to
education for women, she rose above adversity
of war and fire yet always she retained a charm
of dignity throughout the changing years.

So shall it be with her daughters as they pass
through her doors into their respective lives. May
they possess that same graciousness which is their
heritage from their mother college.

Alma Mater

Hail to thee, our Alma Mater;

Guardian of our days;
For thy spirit, never failing

We would sing thy praise.
High aloft we hold thy banner,

Ever loyal, true;
Hail to thee, our Alma Mater,

Hail to thee, LaGrange.

In thy mighty grove of learning,

Wisdom's path we've sought;
High upon thy lofty hilltop

Visions have been wrought.
From our hearts we sing the chorus,

Let the sound prolong!
Hail to thee, our Alma Mater,

Hail to thee, LaGrange.

When One of Two Fair Roads
Had to Choose

Life's road one rosy dream before me lay.

I seldom bothered with what lay ahead

Amused myself with idle dreams instead,

Or gay diversions all along the way.

And then I came to that one time, one place,

Where my road branched. As far as I could see

Both roads gave equal promise unto me.

How could I know which way I ought to face?

There was no way for me to estimate,

Or ever know, what I might gain or lose,

When one of two fair roads I had to choose;

My choice was guided only by my fate.

So I resolved, whatever fate I met,

I'd not recall that choice with vain regret.

Music

God looked upon his work, the earth,

with all its sea and land,
And saw the youth were filled with

joy they could not understand.
Their world was made of wondrous things;

their hearts were glad and gay,
And God made music to express the

thoughts they could not say.

All through the night a mother sat

beside a trundle bed
To watch her child, to smooth the

pillow for his restless head.
The longing of her boundless love no

utterance ever knew
Until God sent a lullaby from out the

midnight blue.

A lonely man, white haired and bent

turned slowly toward the west
To view the last bright sunset ere he

crept away to rest,
And to his heart there came a sound

low, gentle, as a sigh
God's music sent to show his soul the

star path to the sky.

Excerpts from Early Catalogues
of the College

"To educate woman is to refine the world."

Parents and guardians may entertain no fears as to the health of LaGrange.
True, for the last two years our Institution has been invaded by mumps,
measles, and coughs, but for four years with an average of one hundred pupils
there has occurred within our knowledge but one case of fever proper within
the circle of our Institute. 1848.

With a view to promote the health and give graceful action to the pupils,
Calesthenic Exercises were, at an early period in the history of the Institute,
incorporated as a part and parcel of the system of education. An intellectual
education, be it ever so extensive and perfect, is incapable of answering its
ends without bodily health and vigor. This exercise has been improved from
time to time till now it is a perfect system of delicate gymnastics. The whole
school are exercised twice a day in the various steps and manipulations all of
which are directed and harmonized by the music of the violin. 'Tis not danc-
ing, and yet it accomplishes all the good that dancing proposes, without in-
curring any of the evils of that entertainment. 1851.

A good constitution is all important for any and all of the purposes and
employments of life. A delicate and refined system of gymnastics in the form
of Calesthenics has been introduced into this Institution and so arranged as
that it at once forms a part and parcel of our entire plan of education. To
make this exercise more efficient and to inspire the pupil with sufficient fond-
ness for it, it is conducted in connection with appropriate music. 18 5 5.

For good water, pure air, and delightful climate LaGrange has no superior.
The extraordinary health of students and citizens attest this fact. 18 58-18 59.

"A sound mind in a sound body" is an old maxim, none the less desirable
on account of age. To secure this we have a most accomplished teacher in
this department who gives daily instruction in the use of wands, rings, and
dumb bells, free of charge. The muscular development in her pupils has been
most gratifying to their parents. . . . These exercises are all conducted by
music. The time must therefore be perfect, giving the class the additional
advantage of training in time. 1876-77.

DUNSON MILLS

LaGRANGE, GEORGIA

MANY YEARS AGO LaGrange was named by one of her first citizens "The
City of Elms and Roses;" since that time she has also become the City of Cotton
Mills; and her residents may justly feel a pride in either name.

THE DUNSON MILLS lies on the eastern edge of the city, between the Atlanta
and West Point Railroad and the Atlanta Highway, Route 14. Its buildings and
the grounds are among the most attractive in the South today. The main mill
building and offices are surrounded by a wide expanse of velvety lawns, green
the year round, and appropriately planted with flowering and evergreen shrubs.
The mill building is of red brick with white trim, and has a base planting of
shrubbery. The tenement village has some three hundred houses of three and
four room types, at all tim'es kept freshly painted white, with green trim. Every
home is provided with electric lights and running water and has ample room
surrounding it for flower and vegetable gardens, chickens, and a cow if desired.
The City of LaGrange rents from the Company its splendid two-story brick
school building and operates there a grammar school. The Company operates
at its own expense a well-equipped kindergarten for the small children.

A full-time graduate nurse is regularly employed by the Company for the welfare
of its employees and their families, and group life insurance at a very low rate
is provided for all who wish it.

The Company a few years ago built two modern brick churches, one of Old
English and one of Colonial design, and besides furnishing light, heat and
janitor service for the congregations using them, also contributes substantially
to the support of their resident pastors.

The Dunson Mills Extends Greetings and Good Wishes Not
Only to the LaGrange College Seniors of 1937
