TOR.

The 1984 year brought new and ex-
citing highUghts to the Augusta
College campus. One of these high-
lights was the declaration of A.C.'s
purchase of the old Forest Hills V.A.
medical building. The Augusta Col-
lege Foundation and the Board of
Regents of the University system of
Georgia joined with the General Ser-
vices Administration to buy the 26.5
acre area, on March 26.

Several plans are being considered
for the facility. President Christen-
berry stated in a press conference
held at the college that the college
plans to "develop a continuing edu-
cation department." Other plans for
the area will include a housing cen-
ter for 300 to 400 students. This
dorm will increase A.C.'s enroll-
ment to include out-of-town trans-
fers as well as out-of-town athletes.
Another plan for the land will be to
renovate the adjoining land for a
golf course and joining parking lot
to be located near the Pine Needle
Road area.

The actual purchase price for the
land and the building was $450,000.
Early appraisal of the land illustrat-
ed that $2 million to $4 million
would be needed for renovation and
development. Dr. Christenberry,
like all of the student body, admin-
istration and faculty, anxiously
awaits the opening of this new addi-
tion to the campus, which Dr.
Christenberry hopes to be as soon as
fall quarter of 1985.

Friday, April 27th brought the 5th annual A.C. Hoedown, sponsored by
the student union, held in the C.A.C. This year's Hoedown featured good
ole' foot-stompin' contemporary country/western music by the Barkley
Brothers Band, delicious barbecue catered by Sconyers, and all the Old
Style brew that all the country folk could guzzle. Students enjoyed the
evening of eating, dancing, and drinking til the wee hours of the mor-
nin'!

Twenty-four of Augusta Col-
lege's most academically
prestigious students were in-
ducted into Phi Kappa Phi, a
national collegiate honor so-
ciety, on Friday, May 4, 1984.
The banquet was held to hon-
or the students in the top ten
percent of the Senior class,
and the top five-percent of
the Junior class. In addition,
these students must also
maintain a grade point aver-
age of 3.5 or better.

Each year. Phi Kappa Phi
elects one outstanding facul-
ty member as an honorary
member of the society. Dr.
Helen Callahan of the Histo-
ry department was chosen
this year. Congratulations are
extended to these students
for their superior academic
achievements.

The 1983-84 White Columns staff consisted of only five members, but we still had a
productive year. Working on the book kept us busy, but we still took time to attend
an exciting workshop in Atlanta. We had a great time putting this volume together
and hope that you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it. Our staff looks forward
to working on this year's book.

Staff members are shown below at play (left to right) Barbara Jessie, Leonard Bates
(editor), Kim Gilbert, Valerie Spratlin, and Riconda Fortson. The Advisor for White
Columns is Keith Cowling, also shown at play.

Bell
Ringer

The Bell Ringer
newspaper staff,
pictured not too
busy here, deserved
a break from
their hard work and
headaches this year.
It was hard to meet
those deadlines, but
with the joint ef-
forts of the dedi-
cated editors and
hard-working staff
members, we stu-
dents were always
confident of the pa-
pers in those boxes
on the specific
dates.

The editors and
staff of this year's
paper served the
A.C. community
well. Tricia Blount
served as Editor-in-
Chief for the Fall
and Winter quar-
ters. In the Spring
quarter, Bruce Wil-
lig took over as the
new Editor. The
staff and sponsor,
Jim Garvey, devoted
many hours making
those interesting
and informative ar-
ticles for the student
body, faculty, and
administration.

Black

Student

Union

Black Student Union is always busy
with different activities, such as
sponsoring guest speakers. A.C.'s
own Lillie Jugurtha spoke during
one of the distinguished black
speaker series. Black Student Union
also had a tree planting ceremony in
front of the C.A.C. in memory of
Martin Luther King. B.S.U. is active
not only on campus, but also within
the community.

''Center
Stage''

This year's Student Union brought many new and
talented performers to Center Stage, the entertaining
coffee-house atmosphere of the C.A.C. Many of these
performers included Gene Gotten, Michael John, and
Ed Jackman.

While the students and Faculty enjoyed the musical
talents of the spotlight guests. Student Union provided
an assortment of wine and cheese to enhance the even-
ings.

Homecoming

'83

Homecoming is traditionally a time for A.C. alumni to
join with present students in enjoying a week of festivi-
ties; this year was no exception. The week of activities
culminated with the Homecoming games at the Civic
Center, followed by the Homecoming Dance. I.C.C. pro-
vided a unique dance with a Mardi Gras atmosphere.
Music was provided by Generation. The highlight of the
evening was the crowning of the Queen and King. After
the suspense was ended, Delia Crews emerged as the
Homecoming Queen and George Leverett was named
Homecoming King.

Student
Government
Association

Student Government plays a major role in decision-making at
Augusta College. Every student is affected by the actions of the
S.G.A. To the left, the Executive officers are captured in carry-
ing out the T.A.S.K. They are Craig Stanley (president), D. Faye
Lyons (vice president), Nita Wiggins (secretary), and Ted Ever-

Did you ever think that the college Forced you to
take a Foreign language just to make you suFFer?
Well, it is not exactly like that. Learning a Foreign
language can be Fun. It's not always conjugating
verbs. Los Amigos Hispanicas sponsors a variety oF

The 1983-84 Cullum Series focused on Japanese cul-
ture through an extensive series of informative
films, slide shows, presentations, and lectures by
special guest speakers a series which offered the
Augusta College community the opportunity to
learn a great deal about Japan, its people, and their
lifestyles.

The Cullum Lecture Series is an educational pro-
gram which enables interested persons to further
their knowledge of foreign cultures, concentrating
primarily on those nations which exert considerable
influence on the international level. The series is
open to all A.C. faculty and students, as well as to
all Augusta residents.

The sun gods and goddesses were out of luck

for a while on May 30, 1984 due to a total

eclipse of the heart, no sun. Even though

Augusta was not in the direct path of the

shadow, we did experience some darkening

and cooler temperatures during the eclipse.

The peak of the eclipse, when the moon fully

covered the sun, happened in Augusta at

approximately 12:26 p.m. Atlanta, however,

was in the direct path of the umbra. This was

the last major solar eclipse of this century.

The next one will occur in the year 2017. For

those of us hoping to be out of college by

then, we had only this one chance to celebrate

Eclipse Day at A.C. Most people gathered in

front of the C.A.C. with their sunglasses; some

teachers let their classes experience the eclipse

while others played baseball with a ping-pong

ball and tennis racket in honor of Augusta

College's first annual Eclipse Day.

Fortunately, it is no longer necessary to

sacrifice a virgin in order to dispell the eclipse

and appease the god's anger it's just as

"Trauma Time"
Final exams are drawing nearer;

It's trauma time.
Visions of F's are getting clearer;

It's trauma time.
All through my late night study, speed, no doze, and Brim

I panic because it's trauma time.

Why did I wait so long to study or buy the book?
Cliff Notes have always been my buddy;
I'll take a look.

My eyes are road maps, and my nerves are shot to hell;
Let's get drunk because it's trauma time!

Sung to the tune of "Twilight Time"

"Cram It!"

You've played all quarter.
And you've let it slide.
Those books and projects
Have been pushed aside.
Now time is running out.
And there's no place to hide,
So cram it! Cram It!
Finals again! Oh, damn it!
Cram some more history.
Cram some more speech.

It doesn't matter
Whatever they teach
Just cram it! Cram It!

Sung to the tune of "Beat It'

Augusta College Alma Mater

Where sentinels once guarded
Thy armaments of yore,

Now aged oaks sublimely
Bespeak a lofty lore.
(Chorus)

CHORUS:

All hail, Augusta College

Our voices now we raise
To give thee. Alma Mater,

Our fervent love and praise.

And we, thy sons and daughters.
Who pass thy portals through,

Will keep thy inspiration
With honor high and true.
(Chorus)

Thy sword is now a plowshare.
And peace enshrines thy name;

The flag unfurled above thee
Adds glory to thy fame.
(Chorus)

What would future generations find if they were to
return to Augusta College of 1983-84 via an H.G. Well-
sian type of time machine? It was the famous year of
George Orwell's novel which depicted the depersonal-
ization of mankind and the ever watchful eye of Big
Brother. During this school year, Augusta Mayor Ed
Mclntyre was found quilty of corruption in office and
sentenced to five years in prison. Sheriff J.B. Dykes
was also found guilty of malfeasance in office and
sentenced to four years in prison. Ben Crenshaw, a
Texan, won the 1984 Masters, somewhat compensat-
ing for Texas' 10-9 loss to Georgia in the '84 Cotton
Bowl. Also in 1984, Georgia's first heart transplant
operation was performed at University Hospital. Au-
gusta College acquired property for the construction of
dormitories. On the international and national levels.
President Reagan signed a bill which raised the legal
drinking age to 21. Shirley MacClaine finally won an
Oscar for Terms of Endearment , 1984's best picture.
The U.S.S.R. refused to participate in the Olympics,
and New Orleans hosted the 1984 Louisiana World
Exposition. Vanessa Williams was chosen the first
black Miss America, and Geraldine Ferraro was select-
ed as the first woman vice-presidential running mate.
Breakdancing was the rage, and on the contemporary
music scene it was Michael Jackson, Boy George and
Culture Club, and the Eurythmics. All in all it was
an unforgettable year!

Former Sheriff J. B. Dykes

Augusta College was chartered in 1925 as
the Junior College of Augusta. Fifty
years later, A.C. administration, faculty,
staff, alumni, and students celebrated
half a century of educational progress. In
preparation for this celebration. Dr. Ca-
shin researched A.C.'s history and traced
it to the Academy of Richmond County,
one of our nation's oldest high schools.
A.R.C. was founded in 1783, a date
which should be shared by Augusta Col-
lege since several other schools in Geor-
gia use founding dates of institutions
from which they originated.

Presently, the University of Georgia is
considered Georgia's oldest institution
of higher education, having been found-
ed in 1785. The proposal to change A.C.'s
founding date to 1783, two years prior to
U.G.A.'s, was brought before the Board
of Regents July 10th. Unfortunately, the
Board rejected this proposal because
U.G.A. is planning its 200th birthday
celebration in 1985, and such a change in
U.G.A.'s standing would detract from its
celebration. President Christenberry
stated in a press conference that we
would use these two years to gather fur-
ther evidence to support the proposal to
change Augusta College's founding date
to 1783. Meanwhile, we students anx-
iously await the certain upcoming 2
birthday celebration here at Augusta
College!

EDITOR'S NOTE:

On behalf of the staff, I thank all those people who helped in producing White Columns 1984. We expressly
thank Mike Thomas for general errands (and there were many of them), Vicky Spratlin for a little of everything
(sealing packages inside the post office after it closed), and Dr. May for assistance with copy ("Trauma Time" and
"Cram It"). I personally thank my editorial staff for their dedication and productivity, particularly Valerie for all
the times she took photographs, printed and developed them in one day to meet deadlines, those listed below for
contributing artwork and photographs, and Keith Cowling for lettering and artwork

Fellow students enjoy your yearbook!

Sincerely,

Leonard Bates
