The Sophomore Class of 1959 is the first class to complete two full years in Augusta College at its new
location, the site of the historical Augusta Arsenal. In 1957 the freshmen elected as their president Tony
Atkins, who also served as vice president of the Student Council. Gail Bennett was secretary-treasurer and
Student Council representatives were Barbara Best, Mary Helen McGinty and Jeanette Bodenhamer. Tony
and Mary Helen were voted Freshman Favorites.
Several changes were effected in 1958. The Junior College of Augusta was renamed Augusta College and
was placed under the University System of Georgia. As a result, it began operating imder the quarter
system. Butch Myrick and Mary Helen McGinty represented the school as Mr. and Miss Augusta College.
Barbara Tucker reigned over the Christmas Belle Ball, which will become a tradition of the college.
