- Description:
- In this interview, Henry Ahrenhold recalls his experiences serving in the United States Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War. He remembers his growing up years, his education, and how he met and married his wife. He was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduating the ROTC program at Lehigh University and describes being called to active duty shortly after his marriage. He recalls their experiences securing adequate housing and remembers his combat training with live ammunition. He applied and successfully tested to become an Army pilot, but his request was denied because he received orders to Korea. He describes his transit to Korea by plane, boat, and rail and recalls how cold it was in the country. He describes his unit's activities, including a harrowing experience retrieving a disabled tank. He received orders to Okinawa and describes bringing his wife and baby daughter there by boat. He describes their living quarters and the domestic workers they employed. He remembers the friends they met in Okinawa, their leisure activities, and how their maid taught their daughter Japanese nursery rhymes. They returned to the United States in 1954 and he describes their cross-country drive, how he secured orders to the New York Engineer District, and his duties there. He recalls his post-military career in the paper industry and how he became involved with the Savannah Yacht Club.
