- Description:
- In this interview, Jack Nystrom recalls his experiences in the United States Navy at the end of World War II. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and describes his education, his brother's earlier service in World War II, and his reasons for enlisting. He describes his service in the Fleet Airborne Electronics Training Unit (FAETU) in Norfolk, Virginia. He recalls several incidents there, including walking through a submarine and watching the "wheels up" landing of a Navy war plane. He remembers in detail his reaction to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and his older brother's first morning after returning from the war in Europe. His brother physically attacked his father as an instinctive reaction to being touched while asleep. He describes his Brooklyn neighborhood during the war and his father's reputation in the neighborhood as a tough but fair policeman. He describes attending Rutger's University for two years and remembers that his student housing was located in a former German prisoner of war camp at the Raritan Arsenal in New Jersey. He describes how he met his wife and recalls their life together, including owning a farm and traveling the country while he worked as a welding inspector.
