- Description:
- In this interview, Dan Holtz recalls his 25-year career in the United States Air Force. He describes his growing up years, his education, and his reasons for selecting the Medical Service Corps after being commissioned in 1966. He mentions his early assignments and describes in detail his work as an advisor to a civilian hospital in Phan Rang as part of the Military Provincial Health Assistance Program during the Vietnam War. The open air hospital was decades old and included both Vietnamese civilian staff and personnel from the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. He describes their mission there to provide support to the hospital and the MEDCAP missions they conducted to surrounding villages. He reflects on the good they did and on the Vietnamese people and culture. He was later assigned to serve as an escort for a returning POW, James Cutter, and describes the process of repatriating American prisoners of war from Vietnam and his friendship with Cutter. He was later assigned to a Royal Air Force Base in England and describes his work and life there. He was then assigned to direct the Uniformed Services Treatment Facilities program, where he was responsible for developing the first HMO system in the Department of Defense. He recalls his retirement from active duty and his post military careers, including his present work serving as the Chief Fiscal Officer for the Georgia Department of Veteran's Services. He reflects on his family and his involvement in a number of support services for veterans.
