- Description:
- In this interview, Ed Payne recalls his service as an Army physician during the Vietnam War. He recalls his growing up years and choosing the ROTC program in college for the extra income and the chance have a choice of when to serve in the military. He remembers how difficult it was to leave his 11 month-old twins for his first duty station as an intern in Hawaii. He describes his arrival in Vietnam and the living conditions in his first unit, including the furniture soldiers would build from the lumber used in ammunition shipping crates. He remembers several of the patients he treated, including a soldier struck in the head by a helicopter blade and another who suffered third degree burns over 70% of his body in an explosion. He describes MEDCAP missions and dining with local Vietnamese leaders. He recalls in detail his last assignment in Vietnam, serving in a drug treatment center. He describes the treatments they used there to alleviate withdrawal symptoms and comments on how dangerous the heroin widely available in Vietnam was compared to that available in the United States because of the difference in purity. He recalls his return to the United States and his post military career and family.
