- Description:
- In this interview, Jimmy Bevis recalls his experiences as a United States Navy hospital corpsman serving with Marine Corps units during the Vietnam War. He describes his family's background in military service and that he joined the Navy to avoid being drafted. He explains his attitudes and feelings about war. He describes his training and his first assignment with an aborted mission to invade North Vietnam. He recalls later assignments with the 26th Marines, working with Medevac crews based on the USS Princeton and USS Okinawa. He comments on the Vietnamese people and the indigenous Montagnard people. He recalls meeting a veteran many years later who recognized him as the corpsman that saved his life. He describes his homecoming and the anti-war protestors who attempted to urinate on his group. He recalls the first time he spoke about his experiences in Vietnam and how cathartic it was. He displays photos he took in Vietnam of his unit's work providing medical care to civilians as well as treating Marines for "jungle rot" and STDs.
