- Description:
- In part two of this three-part interview, Ken Steele recalls his experiences serving in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He remembers his boot camp experience and the living conditions on the troop train that took him from the East Coast to San Diego. He describes being sent to the Pacific theatre of operations; his job carrying ammunition during combat; and sleeping in a rain-filled foxhole for two days. He explains his later work as a Marine Corps officer defending enlisted men in courts martial. He describes breaking his thumb while jumping in a bomb crater to avoid a Japanese sniper on Iwo Jima. He describes the medical care he received; returning home after the war; his post-war education; joining the Marine Corps a second time as an officer; and explains the culture of the Marine Corps. He remembers May Patterson Goodrum and her relationship with his mother. He reflects on educator Dr. Philip Weltner and Weltner's son (and Ken's classmate), Charles L. Weltner. (Note: This series of interviews was conducted to document Mr. Steele's connection with the May Patterson Goodrum House in Atlanta, Georgia, in addition to documenting his military service in World War II and Korea. The bulk of this second interview pertains to his military experience in World War II. Please view part 1 to hear him discuss his connection with the Goodrum House in greater detail. Please view part 3 to hear him discuss his service in the Korean War.)
