- Description:
- In part one of this two-part interview, Jay Pryor recalls his service in the United States Navy in the Vietnam War. He describes growing up in Albany, Georgia; how and why he enlisted in the Navy; attending Officer Candidate School; and his first duty station on the USS Hissem, a destroyer escort ship. He remembers traveling to meet the ship which was then deployed in the Pacific. He describes the Hissem's history, mission, and duties, including their work supporting Operations Market Time and Taiwan Patrol and providing gunfire support. He describes many incidents on board ship including the "Crossing the Line" ceremony; replenishing fuel while underway; and a depth charge explosion that blew a hole in the hull of the ship. He displays many photographs that illustrate life onboard ship and in port. His subsequent duties included serving as communications officer for a destroyer squadron and he compares those duties with his service on the Hissem. He describes the special bond forged by Hissem crew members and the reunions they have had. He comments on the leadership displayed by his commanding and executive officers and recalls his marriage, family, and post-military careers.
