- Description:
- In this interview, Brayton Paul recalls his experiences growing up in rural North Dakota and then serving in the United States Army during World War II. He describes in great detail his early years in Ryder, North Dakota, including his family, education, and early interest in model airplanes. His father died when he was six and he recalls how his mother managed to feed and house the family during the Great Depression. He remembers working for the Civilian Conservation Corps and later for the Glenn L. Martin company, riveting the wings on B-26 aircraft. He was drafted as a replacement soldier after the Battle of the Bulge and was sent to Europe, where he met up with his brother who served in Battery B of the 285th Field Artillery Observation Battalion. His brother was not among the men executed by the Germans in the Malmedy Massacre, but he recalls listening to the experiences of a man who survived that massacre. He remembers several combat experiences, including taking German prisoners of war and the death and destruction he witnessed across Europe. When his wife contracted polio after the war, the Red Cross assisted him with a discharge and he describes his post-military careers.
