- Description:
- In this interview, Louise Unkrich recalls her service as a "Rosie the Riveter" in the war industry during World War II. She recalls growing up in farming communities in Iowa and attending technical school after she graduated from high school. The school suggested that the Glenn L. Martin Bomber Plant near Omaha, Nebraska, needed workers so she and several friends hired on there. She describes her work assembling and riveting ailerons for B-29 bombers. She describes their living conditions and recalls playing softball for the plant. She wanted to become a WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) but her boyfriend told her he would not marry her if she did because women in the service "didn't have a very good name back then." She describes her husband's service in the Pacific, their post-war life together, and her volunteer activities, including establishing and directing the Swedish American Museum and Historical Society in Swedesburg, Iowa.
