- In this interview, Melburne McLendon recalls his experiences in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He recalls his brothers who served in the Coast Guard, the Seabees, and the Navy. He describes his early jobs and education as well as his reasons for volunteering. He describes his efforts to become a pilot and attend gunnery school. He recalls his voyage to England via Palm Beach (Fla.), Trinidad, Natal & Belim (Brazil), Dakar (Senegal), Marrakesh (Morroco), Spain, Portugal, and Wales. He describes in detail what it was like to be in a ball turret. He recalls several of his missions, including D-Day and the one in which he was shot down. He was taken prisoner by the Germans and he recalls the conditions there. He recounts the liberation of his prison camp by Patton's forces. He details the days immediately after his release, his recuperation and voyage home. He discusses his post-war education and career.
