- Description:
- In part two of this two-part interview, Bob Jones recalls his career as a pilot in the Army Air Corps pilot in the CBI during World War II. He relates that at the war's end, all the equipment was left for the Chinese Nationalists, to help with with the Chinese Communists in the north. According to Jones, the U.S. knew the conflict was coming. He vividly describes the city of Calcutta and its people. He and his unit boarded a merchant marine ship just as two hundred nurses were going home on the same ship. He recalls their voyage home, including standing watch in heavy seas, as well as taking on an injured Russian sailor from a Liberty ship that had been donated to the Russians during a storm. The voyage took them through the Indian Ocean, near Singapore, Formosa, and the Aleutian Islands, arriving in Portland (Or.). He describes his feelings at seeing the United States again, as well as out-processing and the train ride home. He recalls the war experiences of his two brothers; his brother Harry was flying B-26s in Europe and was just told to fly home. His other brother fought in Okinawa. With a voice filled with emotion, he describes his homecoming, which was punctuated with humor when his family saw his haircut. He recalls some difficulty readjusting, working with his brother, and joining the reserves. His unit was recalled during the Korean War, and he ferried planes. He describes his career as a civilian pilot and describes his favorite aircraft. He recalls a reunion of his unit.
