- Description:
- In this interview, Jim Jernigan recalls his career in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He was working and going to school when he was drafted under the student deferment plan. He was a high-speed radio operator in the Signal Corps. He took the Air Force exam and became a navigator. He describes his training, including using tow targets with colored bullets. He received orders to go to Mountain Home, Idaho, but stopped in Minnesota for Christmas with one of his buddies. The roads were so bad between Minnesota and Idaho, that they had to drive south as far as Omaha. They skidded on snow and turned the car over and Jernigan was injured, resulting in surgery. They were cared for by a German family and a German doctor. While he was recuperating, the war had ended in Europe. He was sent for training to prepare for the Pacific when the atomic bomb was dropped. He discusses his post-war education and career.
