- In part one of this two-part interview, Gene Frazier describes his experiences as an Army Air Forces pilot in the Pacific during World War II. He remembers sharing a one-bedroom apartment with two friends when the landlady called them down to hear the news about the attack on Pearl Harbor on the radio; the three enlisted together and Frazier gives a brief statement about the careers of his friends. He describes his father giving him an 1843 copper penny at the train station and he kept it throughout the war; his son still has it. After Army basic training, he was sent for college training. He recalls that his first airplane ride was in a 65-hp Piper Cub and his first "bomb" was a two-pound paper sack of flour. Later in his career, he was flying an 8,800 hp bomber dropping 2-ton bombs over Japan. He was sent to Santa Ana (Calif.) for classification and Oxnard (Calif.) for primary flight training.
