- Description:
- This recording opens with singer Bessie Jones' rendition of "Preachin the Blues" and an introduction of the program by Boyd Lewis. At 1:05 the program begins. The theme throughout is myths and realities surrounding southern women, and in particular white southern women. The feature begins with audio clips of unidentified women offering perspectives of what it means to be a woman in the south. The feature also includes sound bites from Dr. Darlene Roth of Emory University, Southwind commentator Mike Malloy, Eliza Paschall and Shirley Miller, wife of then Lieutenant Governor Zell Miller. The second part of this feature, which begins at 11:27, is a report from reporter Jill Bell of WUOT in Knoxville, Tennessee. This part focuses on southern Appalachian women and includes audio clips of Dr. Pat Ball, Public Affairs Director for the city of Knoxville; Paul Campbell, professor of Appalachian Studies at the University of Tennessee; and community activist Tilda Camplin. The next segment, which begins at 19:00, with a reading of an excerpt from "Gone With the Wind," focuses on the struggles in passing the Equal Rights Amendment and includes audio from ERA advocate Sharon Adams. At 21:26, an excerpt on Rosemary Daniel's Fatal Flowers is read, which leads into a profile of the Georgia author in which she is interviewed about her writing about her mother. At 24:25, audio of an Atlanta wedding is played, which leads into an essay about marriage by Atlanta writer Midge Sweet. The program ends with a sign off by Boyd Lewis.
