- Description:
- This recording opens with an introduction of the program by Boyd Lewis. The first segment, which begins at 1:01, is a feature about a conference in Atlanta about banned books. The conference emerged around the backdrop of raids of Atlanta book stores, and increased pressure by interest groups. The program features audio excerpts from Frank Maquire of Maquire's Bookshop; author Paul Hemphill; Jean Young, wife of Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young; librarian Jewel Kitchen; Gene Loring, owner of Christopher Kind, a bookshop that features book titles with gay and lesbian themes; Father Dan O'Connor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church; Bud Foote of Georgia Tech; freelance writer Gail Rader; novelist Frances Statham, and Rob Raymar of the Georgia ACLU. The second segment, which begins at 16:05, is a feature about editor and author Hoyt Fuller. The program features audio excerpts of people who spoke at his funeral, which took place in 1981. Included are actor Ossie Davis; Reverend George Thomas and Helena Jones Brown of the Institute of the Black World. The third segment, which begins at 22:20, is a rebroadcast of a "Southwind" program that aired in June 1983 about author Margaret Mitchell and the reception to her book, Gone With The Wind. The program features audio excerpts from Augusta Dearborn Edwards and Sam Tupper, friends of Margaret Mitchell; journalists Raleigh Bryant and Yolanda Gwin, and actress Berne Poliokoff, who reads an excerpt from "Gone With the Wind." The program ends with a sign off by Boyd Lewis.
