Let the words of my mouth, mediation of my heart, be acceptable in Thy sight. 0 Lord, my strength my redeemer... Acts 4:13 we find these words. They took knowledge of them, that had been with Jesus. Companionship With Christ Companionship with Christ. This is another one of peters, John's and James' episode with the Jews concerning their power to heal, and because the had no license, they had to give in account of what they were doing. The Jews wanted to accuse them and the said, "Now if we said that these men are men of the devil; we said that the devil does not have any power. And we saw before our eyes , a man that was lame, who had been at the gates. for a long time; who have been begging for all these years, was able to rise and walk at the command of Peter. Therefore, if we say_.hen that they have power; then we would be given proof to. this man whom we crucified.. We crucified Jesus because they said he was not the son of God, he had no authority and raeson whatsoever. So we crucified him. And if we give these men credit, then we will only be giving credit to this man called Jesus. And we would be condeming our own acts and doings. Therefore, they asked them, who gave you the authority or what mane did you heal this man under. Peter looked at them and said, "If you are inquiring about the lame man, then you ought to know because the man whom you crucified, Jesus Christ, it is his name that we has given him strength. We must hold on to the Christain religion. We must hold on to the Christain religion inspite of everything that has hoppened in our modern day world and everything that is taking place around us and many of our young men and young women going away to school being taught by infidels in the colleges. and the universities, who do not believe in God. We have to tell them and plead with them and lead them in the right direction and tell them to hold on to the christain religion. We are aware of the fact that there are many religions. We won t t discuss the religions but we would lile to emphasize the necessity of holding on to the christain religion. Religion has traditionall played an important role in human history. This is practically of their religion is a reflection of their precarious status in the American society. Denied the opportunity to participate as equals in the religious life and other American institutions. Blacks have organized their own demoninations as a means of soping with the social isolations which they were forced to encounter. Although their religions and their institutions contain basically religious institutions so. It is especially true in their religion that some-elements of the. African heritage are to be found in their religion. That is the reason why many people in many other races just cant understand why the Negro expresses himself like he do@s in his religious acts. It is in religion it i.s'.in the church that he is able to free himself and through the church he feels like that is was God that freed ' him. Theref o-re, the reason why they act as they do sometimes, it is because what they feel from within; that someway, somehow there is a God-that moves in mysterious ways, that lead them through the dark days of slavery and freed them. We must hold on to the christain religion.. We do know that the first black people to settle in America was systematically striped of their traditions. They are stripp&d,of their culture, including their traditional African religion. But still there is a part of it in them and they can't get away from it.. The people who came in contact with those early christains. They took knowledge too that they had been Frith Jesus and, were wonderful commentaries on their lives. Four things coused people to recognize that they had been with Jesus. And we who are followers of Jesus Christ today, we who believe in the christain religion trying to hold on to:. Christ,_it would be good.. If we would follow some of the examples. First of all, they gave their testamony. They were continually witnessing for Christ. They were not ashamed when you meet them on the highways, they would tell you I believe in-this man you crucified. Regardless of where they they were or where they went, they were vlling to let the world know they were witnesses of Christ. Secondly, The conatenance of those early disciples shone. They would shine anywhere. The gladness they felt in their hearts was ezpressed on their faces. There was a radiance about them. The Shekinah, the creek word used here, of the glory of God rested upon them. VRaich meant that there was something within that. works so powerfully, that you were abe to see it in their faces. Unless we have something within to move us through these trouble days,.unless we have something within to move us through these bewildered hour, unless we have something to grasp and to hold on to, then we will be lost in the crowd. Thirdly, they had courage and boldness. They were bold in the face of persecution. They realized that their witnessing might cost them their lives, but they were ready to stand for God and righteousness regardless of the cost. They were willing to stand regardless of what happened. Many of our people are so confused in this modern day world, they have heard so many things they don't know what to do. It is kind of like a story I heard in the Governor's Conference. A little boy in the streets asked another boy to go to church with him. And when he went to church with him, they started singing a song, "Sit Down Servant" and when they started to singing they asked him to stand up. ,fio the little boy looked at the other little boy and he stood up. And then while a little later in the service, they started to singing "Stand Up For Jesus". The little boy looked at him and told him to sit down. So when he went back home his Mother asked him, "Say son, how did you enjoy the service"? He said Mother, "I don't know, the people sang sit down and they make you stand up and they sing stand up and make you sit down." "I don't know what to do when we go to that church, we are so entangled, so involved in so many things on the outside, we don't know whether toD sit down or stand up anymore. But may I say to you this afternoon, we need to hold on to the christain religion. The deeds witnessed for them.. The deeds of the early disciples witness for them. And regardless of where they were they were able to show that they were children of God.. And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against them. The Scribes and Pharisees found that this man for many years had been at the gate. Every morning his family would get him ready and carry him there and sit him on a pillow or a chair. And they could sit there, and every one that passed dropped a penny in the hat. For a long time they had been waiting there for someone to help this man. As they were going to the temple. The world, the world wants to see the fruits of christainity. For a long time, kings priests and all the Alesanderains proups had walked by. And each day would give him enough to live that day. For the next day he he had to go right back and start begging. Every morning, every morning it was neccessay for him to go back to the same place for so,eont to dive him enough money to buy bread. For when Peter, James and John came by he wanted them to give him something . Peter looked at hire and said,"Gold and silver have I none but such as I have freely I give to thee." "I want to rise take up your palet and walk'.' The world wants to see some action in the christain church. We say in the streets, that's where the hap p ens are, we say that we are doing thing. Every other organization, every other facet of life, we as christain ought to bring some action into the church. If the world is giong to be saved we ought to be able to see Jesus in our lives. As we walk the streets in town, they ought to be able to know we are children of God. As we deal, as we deal in politics, we say that the church should stay out of politics. There would be no way for the politics to be cleaned up., unless, a clean man get into it. As long as we stay on the outside there will forever be dirty politics. There will always be dirty governors, dirty Presidents, dirty vice presidents and anything else. But in order for it to be clean, you must enter into it with clean hands, a clean heart, aware of the fact that, out of one blood created all men that dwell upon the face of the earth. you ought to be willing to stand and say I will fight for what is right. Evan though it will cause my life. You see James and John knew their lives were at stake, they knew that they were facing ih e gallows, they knew that the time would come when they would be beheaded. But first of all, they knew that there was a God somewhere, you may take my life, my head, but after while, I'll be able to rise from the dead and buried,I'll be able tor..ise from the tomb with glory in my wings and healing in my soul. We need to hold on to the christain religion. You can take on anything else you want to . But what thus said the Lord, we need to hold on and let the world know we have been with Jesus. Gracious, heavenly Father, help us who are christains in this world, who suppose to be representing the church who at many places and many times representing our people, let us so live that the the world will see Jesus in us. Let us lift toe master up and lift up Jesus Christ and he will draw all -men unto us. This we- ask in thy name. A-men. When He Spoke Chorus: That Man- That Man from Gallilee. SERMON !Leave out 61 -1 09 We would like for you to notice in the book from which we have read, the sixth chapter, and the reader will find these words beginning at the L14th verse. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do no gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather 1chey ,grapes . A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and as evil man out of the evil tr easure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? We would like to reason with you from the 15th verse. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. We would like to reason, concerning of the treasury of a man's heart. Ah, the most important thing in life is to keep the heart. Ah, repetition is precious, for more so-er, than people think. A good name is rather to be chosen. Ah, there is something worth more than repetition. If your heart gets wrong it will show up in your actions. The heart is a treasury in which Satan seeks to rob us. Ah, because Satan knows, ah, that if he can conceive our hearts, he can control our actions, and at the same time, take away from us our good name. We are talking about the heart. This .is a dangerous disease and we see that this nation today is :suffering from heart trouble. Heart trouble. We can see it in the cities, we can see it along the hi-ways, and we, sad but true, see it in the home. Heart trouble. Ah. 'This have been and old friend, as a man think, so reveal. A-men. We don't go places by accident. If you do something, that's your mind. If you say some thing, that's your mind and that comes from the heart. Ah, not only that riy friend, ah, King Solomon had these words to say, ah, give up everything that's necessary but keep our heart. Ah, we loose everything-else and keep our heart we can get all these things over again. But if you loose your heart my friend, the .future. will fade away_.. Pray with me just a Little while today.. We are talking about heart trouble today.- Aha, not that,. ah, someone may say, what is the heart? Ah, the heart is a organ of the human body, which ies between the two lungs. It maintains the circulation of ;the blood through the blood vessels. Ah, the heart that I rexer to in the text may be called spiritual heart. And is the seat of spiritual life which mean strength. Ah, when we-speak in terms of the heart, ah, we mean the mind, the soul, the spirit of one. entire enotion, nature of understanding. ^ord help us today. Ah, the importance of the physical heart and the spiritual heart. If the physical heart is affected sometimes and beat fast, ah, may beat to slow, ah, it will pause a serious complaint. And if it fails to function, then our physical system will collapse and the body will die and. life depart. We are trying to get you to see what we are talkng about today. Ah, nbt only that my friend, likewise, if the spiritual heart is affected, ah, it will cause an upset in. our spiritual system. Ah; if it cease to function, we die spiritually. Ah, the heart have a storage capacity. The visible heart have many parts that are known b_^' man. But one thing about it does not have a storage capacity, its tasks is to pump the blood to every part of the bpdy. Ah, which must obstain life:. The heart that Christ is speaking of today, have a storage capacity wY.ch may be filled wi th either good or bad. Ah, the quality of this storage, my friend, determines the quality of manhood. Ah, one writer said, but those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart_: And they defile the man. For out of the such as: murder, adultery, fornication, thief, aid false witness. Ah, these are the things which defile,.a man. But to eat with unwashen hands does not defile man... Ah, pray with me. just a little while_.; Ah, not only that my friend, ah, hatred, can be stored in the geart.;. Ah, hate your 4ighbor because he has a better job than you have. Ah, not only that my friend, now maybe hate your brother or sister bee. use hhey.havebatbe:bter standing in the church than you have. Ah, not only that my friend, na-a, it is very easy for an evil heart to be confilled, ah, it is not very large.... It is surp ising to day to know just how much sin can be stored in one hbart. Ah, not only that my friend, ah, sometimes I stop and think sometimes, ah, and say what is the trouble with the world today. Ah, every war, ah, that has been fought, ah, I say thr trouble comes from the heart.-. Ah, every like 'ghat has beeb-restored, brethren and sisters, it comes from the heart. Ah, not only that my friend, aha, but James take up the words hear and said, aha, the tongue is poison from the issue of the heart, aha.. We can hear so much language of today that is not become of people.. Aha,. and aha, we are living in time now that people don't care how they use the tongue. Aha, then they don't care what they say: Aha, and then one thing about this generation, it seems like we have lost respect for each other.. Aha, this trouble my friend comes from the heart. Aha, if blessing is in the heart,my friend,'iecwill nelp e ch other. Aha, not only that my friend, but the bible tells me, aha, that good, aha, and evil will not mix together.... Aha, nQt only that my friend, aha, there is only one way and that o lt to be washed by the blood of the Lamb. Aha, Jesus blood w^ll wash your sins away, aha. Aha, Jesus blood will move hatred ray friend, aha. Aha, pray with me just a little while. Nit only that ray friend_., We go to the doctor sometimes, aha, t have an x-ray made, aha, but one thing about it, the intent of the heart, aha, just doe-snot show up is an x-ray picture, aha.. Sacred Harp Singing What A Happy Time I Keep Travelin t On No Tears Up There The Road To Glory Conclusion My project took place in my home town, Elberton, g'eorgia. It-was a small place during the time these customs originated. It has grown considerably over the years. It is located 13L1 miles east of Atlanta.. The Negros there are highly religions and supers^ titious. -They live by the same rules and customs of their parents and their parents before them... Many of the Negro churchs are small with small memberships. However the rural churchs out number the sirburban churchs. The rural Negro churchs and a small number of surburban churchs conduct their service in the same manner done over 200 years ago. Ministers have the s^me deliverance of sermons which is sometimes referred to as fire and brimstone preaching. The sermons were constructed to move the people... When the people became n ghly emotional they began shouting which is in existence npw. The old hymns are being sung with much spirit.. Some of the hymns date back to 1878, 1899, 1881 and even e^rlier. Most of the Negro church were established over. 1 00 years ago. Most churches begin their service with having prayer service. In this service old hymns are sung. They are always included in the service. Prayer is never left oiat. The prayers had a certain ring to them. They were highly emotional. My informants were: Mr. Pilot Bell, my grandfather, who is 70 years old and he has lived in Elberton all his life. He lives in the rural area of Elberton. He 1-tas taught to sing note at the age of 15 by his parents i4,ho were taught by their parents. Note singing is done by a few churchs in my home town. The Church of God and Ch est sings notes and I recorded three selecti:>ns. ire Tie" churchs in the suburban area find it obsolete and sometimes amusing. My grandfather taught note singing to i s children when they were 10 years if age. My mother, I4yola Almond, and aunt, Millie Parker, my step-grandmother recorded one sacred harp song. The first sermon is done by Rev. H.E. McRae, pastor of St. Mary C.N.E. Church. He was called to preach at the age of 1 7. He was born in McRae, Georgia. His sermon is n i t fully done in the old timer way but is not entirely modern. The St. Mary C,i.E. -Church Choir is under the direction of Mrs. Lorainne Smith.. She is a faculty member of the Elbert County School System. The choir members are: Mrs.. R dine Phelps, Mrs. Alene White, Mrs. Sarah Willingham, Miss Cl.ristine Everett, Mr. T.R. Tharps, Mr. James Willingham and Pir. Albert Smith. The second sermon was by Rev.. Ervin Norman, pastor of Dove Creek Baptist Church. It is one of the oldest churchs in Elberton. The Dove Creek choir is under the direction of Mrs. Melve Carter. The choir members are; Mrs. Sarah Bell, Mrs. L. Hester, Miss Jennifer Bell, Miss Regina Bell, Miss Lavonne . Bell, Mrs. Joyce Almond, Mr. Larry Eb erhart and Anthony Eb erhart . I had fun collecting my material for my project. However I was disappointed because the people would not agree to an interview. The people were very considerate and cooperative in many cases. I feel that the project was interesting, inspiring, educational and entertaining. I would be highly pleased to do it over again, if it was necessary.

Professor John Burrison founded the Atlanta Folklore Archive Project in 1967 at Georgia State University. He trained undergraduates and graduate students enrolled in his folklore curriculum to conduct oral history interviews. Students interviewed men, women, and children of various demographics in Georgia and across the southeast on crafts, storytelling, music, religion, rural life, and traditions.
