Rev. Joseph E. Boone (1922-2006) was a civil rights organizer and pastor at Rush Memorial Congregational Church. Known as the "picketing preacher," Boone played a key role in the Atlanta Movement, a series of organized protests by Atlanta University students against segregated facilities and discrimination in hiring practices. In the 1960s, Boone became the chief negotiator for Operation Breadbasket, a program that pushed businesses in African American neighborhoods to employ blacks and provide equal opportunity for advancement. - Local Identifier:
