Joan Little (1953- ) is an African American woman who was accused of killing a white prison guard in a Beaufort County jail in Washington, North Carolina in 1974. The first degree murder charge carried an automatic death sentence if she were convicted. Little contended that she was resisting sexual assault and her trial attracted the national attention of civil rights activists, feminist groups, prisoners' rights advocates and anti-death penalty activists.
