Known as "the Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement," Rosa Parks (1913-2005) was a civil rights activist who became famous by her refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus to a white passenger on March 1, 1955. Her actions sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott which led to a United States Supreme Court decision that declared Alabama's laws requiring segregation unconstitutional. - Local Identifier:
