Hoke Smith (1855-1931) was an attorney, newspaper publisher, and Democratic politician. He purchased the Atlanta Journal in 1887 and as its publisher significantly increased its circulation and profitability. He served as president of the Atlanta Board of Education from 1896 to 1907. He subsequently served as Georgia's governor from 1907 to 1909. Shortly after he was reelected as the state's governor in 1911, he was appointed by the Georgia General Assembly to fill a vacant seat in the United States Senate. He served as a Senator from 1911 until 1921. - Local Identifier:
