- View of the exterior of Liberty Hall, the residence of Alexander H. Stephens, former Vice President of the Confederacy and former Governor of Georgia, in Crawfordville, Georgia.
Alexander H. Stephens (1812-1883) was a life-long politician from Georgia. He was elected to the Georgia State Legislature as a Whig in 1836 and served in that capacity for seven years. He then represented Georgia in the United States House of Representatives from 1843 to 1859. After the Southern states seceded from the Union, Stephens was elected Vice President of the newly formed Confederate government. He was elected to serve in the United States House of Representatives again in 1877. In 1882, Stephens became the governor of Georgia, but died in office the following year. - Local Identifier:
