- Description:
- The old "Calico House," from engraving in Century Magazine of July 1887, illustrating article, "The Struggle for Atlanta," by General O. O. Howard. This article definitely places the old "Calico House" as General Sherman's headquaters. Courtesy the Carnegie Library.
View of the Calico House in Atlanta, Georgia
The Calico House, located at the southeast corner of Wheat and Collins Streets (now Auburn Avenue and Courtland Street respectively), was built in 1860 by Marcus Aurelius Bell, who lived in the house until 1876. The house was painted in shades of blue, yellow, and red to achieve a marbleized effect. Atlantans, however, believed the simulated effect looked like calico fabric and the nickname stuck throughout the building’s long life. During the Civil War, the house served as the headquarters of Sherman’s chief engineer, Captain Orlando M. Poe. In 1904, Asa G. Candler bought the building and it subsequently became the first home of Wesley Memorial, now Emory University Hospital. The hospital moved to the Emory University campus in 1922 leaving the building vacant. It was demolished in 1925. - Metadata URL:
