- Description:
- View of Helen Keller, a deaf blind author, political activist, and lecturer, with Enrico Caruso, an internationally renowned Italian opera tenor, outside the Georgian Terrace Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.
Helen Adams Keller (1880-1968) was an author, political activist, and lecturer. When she was nineteen months old, she contracted an illness that left her deaf and blind. However, she was able to develop sophisticated communications skills by working with her teacher, Anne Sullivan. In 1904, Keller graduated from Radcliffe College, thereby becoming the first deaf blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. Keller went on to become an advocate for people with disabilities, an activist for women's suffrage, and a staunch supporter of the working class. Keller also authored twelve books. - Local Identifier:
