VOLUME 79

FALL 1998 - SPRING 1999

President W. !%ay Ckere

Dear Students:

Each school year has its own
character and is remembered for
different things. This academic year
will certainly be remembered for the
major changes that have taken place
here on the main campus in
Demorest. New buildings that have
either been completed this year or
that are now under construction are
transforming the campus and will
play an important role in Piedmont's
future during the new century.
Along with the addition of a new dormitory, major construction projects include the new
science, math and technology center; a new athletic complex; and renovation of the fourth floor
of Daniel Hall to house the new school of nursing. This year we enrolled the largest freshman
class ever at Piedmont, and for these students we have added new academic opportunities,
including new degree programs in nursing and religion and a new master's degree for public
administration. At the Athens Center, we also added a second building this year that doubles
the size of our academic space for off-campus programs.

Piedmont is an institution with great pride and spirit, and with every passing school year
it becomes more than a small liberal-arts college in northeast Georgia. Every year I am
convinced that the previous academic year could never be surpassed, and always I am proved
wrong. This year has been no exception. I take great pride in watching each new class of
students work to fulfill their academic goals, working with faculty who truly care about the
minds of their students.

To the graduates of 1999, I hope that all of you will return frequently to your alma mater
to see how your college fares in the next century. While there may be new buildings to admire,
I think you will always be able to recognize that old Piedmont spirit in the faces of the students
who follow in your footsteps.

W. Ray Cleere

Orientation f 98

^^^^ '"* " JBBBFiHH8B*Mi bub

Piedmont's Admissions
staff organized another
successful orientation
weekend. The 1998
orientation consisted of
three days of fun-filled
activities which gave
over 100 freshmen the
opportunity to experi-
ence student life at
Piedmont. Students not
only interacted with
faculty and staff, but
they also enjoyed such
activities as a video
talent show, laser tag,
and team competitions
which all served to
build group cohesive-
ness among the fresh-
men.

were filled with a week's worth of
activities which involved the entire
Piedmont College community.
Faculty, staff, and students partici-
pated in such activities as dress as
your favorite professor day, hillbilly
day, pajama day, and the parade.
Student clubs also provided various
activities in Centennial Alumni
Park. This year's main attraction,
other than the Homecoming dance,
was the anticipated performance of
Memory Dean, a popular Atlanta
band. Homecoming 1998 will
certainly be a memorable moment

Answering questions and helping

Charles Thomas Davis, fondly

known as C.T. of Demorest, has played
an integral role in Piedmont College's
history. He graduated in 1973 from
Piedmont with a Bachelor of Arts in
business administration and accounting.
As a student C.T. not only participated
in work study, but he was also a member
of the Student Government and the
yearbook staff. In addition to these
extracurricular activities, C.T. was
Resident Director of Purcell Hall.

After graduating, C.T. continued
working in the business office as a
bookkeeper and cashier. Since 1991,
C.T. has worked in the library as a
technical support assistant. We hope to
keep his library expertise for many more
years.

Currently, C.T. is involved in
Piedmont's Alumni Association and the
American Association of University
Women. Further, he continues to enjoy
helping others and spreading great cheer
among Piedmont's faculty, staff, and
students.

In appreciation of many years of hard
work and dedication to Piedmont, the
Piedmont College family proudly dedi-
cates this year's annual to Charles Tho-
mas Davis. From all faculty, staff, and
students, we say "Thank you."

Piedmont College Radio Stations

WRFP AM 530 was established in 1994 by the Piedmont College Theater Department.
During the Spring semester of 1995, Dr. Janice Moss became the radio station faculty advisor.
Since its establishment, WRFP AM 530 has expanded its operations to include more
programming options for students and the Piedmont College community.

In 1998, WRFP AM 530's radio equipment was upgraded to include analog and digital
audio systems. The station currently has over $1 1,000 of analog and digital sound equipment.
As a result of the upgrade, the new equipment enhanced the quality and amplification of the
station's signal on campus.

WRFP AM 530 is operated by students who have declared Mass Communication as their
minor field of study. While school is in session, these students participate in live broadcasts of
campus news, sports, and national news stories Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

70

WRFP AM 530

Moss was inspired by WPPR 88.3 FM, Piedmont College's new
National Public Radio Station. WPPR 88.3 FM began broadcasting in
December 1996. Moss received numerous telephone calls from WPPR
listeners who were very interested in finding out more about Piedmont
and/or the Mass Communication program.

As a result of the enthusiastic responses, Moss submitted a proposal for
a minor in Mass Communication. The proposed minor offered an
attractive program of study for students majoring in a number of academic
disciplines. In March 1998, the faculty unanimously approved the
proposal.

Moss was instrumental in implementing internship opportunities for
students preparing for a career in communications. Currently, Moss is
establishing a curriculum for a major in Mass Communication. Assisting
Moss with the technological component of the program is Dr. Betsey
Blakeslee, a new faculty member. Overall, Moss's vision for this new
program is to help bring the world together through technology.

Michelle Milone,
the recipient of this
year's outstanding
student broadcasting
award, demonstrates
how she operates the
radio equipment.
