the president's message of 76 . . .
our youthful united states of america is celebrating her bi-
centennial in 1976 and piedmont college is celebrating her
triumphant entrance into the second decade of fully
accredited academic services to eager and able young peo-
ple of applachia, the nation, and the world, on december 10,
1975, the southern association of colleges and schools voted
to continue the membership of piedmont college and thereby
reaffirm her status as a fully accredited four year, liberal arts
co-educational college, validated to award the bachelor of
arts and the bachelor of science degrees, acceptable for ad-
mission to the graduate schools of all universities.
kin to this academic orctiid was the reaffirmed certification
of our teacher training programs by the georgia state depart-
ment of education, the calibre and character of our gradu-
ates continues to measure up to piedmont college's long-
standing tradition of preparing her students for excellence in
classroom leadership, even last year, in spite of economic
difficulties throughout the nation, all of our graduates in ele-
mentary and secondary education found teaching positions.
another landmark of academic excellence on our campus
was established this year by the organization and initiation of
a chapter of alpha chi, a national honor society for juniors
and seniors, faculty leadership for this new development was
provided by dr. mary griggs, dean Jodie I. burton, and dr.
marion c. hodge.
piedmont college was founded in 1897 by the reverend
Charles c. spence, a methodist "circuit rider" and native of
north georgia. one year later the combination of elementary,
high school, and college responsibilities in demorest were
offered to the american missionary association of the
congregational churches, they accepted the challenging
offer, leaving "brother" spence at liberty to concentrate his
concerns for christian education on young harris college
"across the mountain."
the elementary grades and high school classes were taken
over by the state of georgia as public schools in 1927. in
1936 football was discontinued at piedmont college
"because the doctors' bills got to be more than the gate
receipts."
in 1948, cartoonist ripley described piedmont college as
the only four-year liberal arts college in america that did not
have a single building which was designed as a college facil-
ity, a two-story resort hotel was the women's dorm and
college dining room, a small two-story building purchased
from the army housed the business administration classes, a
two-story mule barn was the classroom building, an old
frame house with a leaky roof was the business office and the
president's headquarters.
at that time every building was mortgaged to the hilt, the
college was $167,000 in debt, there was not even enough
credit to buy crackers for soup in October 1949.
in spite of these discouraging circumstances, the board of
trustees felt that there was a continuing need and opportu-
nity for christian service to the young people of the immedi-
ate area and to the youth of supporting congregational
churches everywhere, therefore they voted unaimously in
June 1949 to make one more all' out effort to keep the college
open and to announce registration as usual for September,
they also voted for the third time an invitation to one of their
own members of the board of trustees, James e. waiter, to
serve as the ninth president of piedmont college, within two
weeks, the secretary of the missions council of the congrega-
tional christian churches with an office in boston, mas-
sachusetts, wrote his letter of acceptance and started to
make plans for moving mrs. waiter and their two sons to the
little green house on campus, occupied by professor and
mrs. silas roberts until his death in december of '48.
gathering sufficient gift income to operate the college was
the major challenge, everybody in town was eager to save
the college, but few volunteered contributions, it became
necessary for the novice president to borrow funds per-
sonally, since there was no college credit at the bank, to
meet the november '49 faculty payroll, he prayed hard and
traveled extensively for the gifts necessary to keep the
college in business, eventually we balanced the budget that
first year, and every year since that historic 1949. praise the
lord!
accreditation, which means membership in the southern
association of colleges and schools, was the overriding ob-
jective and guideline from the start, every decision was made
with an eye to the long-range necessity of bringing the
college into academic fellowship and recognition with the
best colleges and universities of the nation, the needs were
multiple and the discouragements were many, in September
1949 there was not a single member of the faculty with an
earned doctorate degree, tuition income was less than half of
the operating expenses, endowment funds were nil. buildings
were all old and below par. but in spite of these handicaps,
dedicated teachers prepared piedmont graduates thoroughly
in the academic disciplines and in self-help work, "by their
fruit . . . shall ye know" the little college that produced
businessmen, nurses, school teachers, doctors, lawyers,
ministers, and housewives that made good in the art of living.
finding new faculty members with christian dedication and
advanced degrees, gathering gifts to support our scholarship
and work-aid programs for eager and diligent young people
who need to work a major part of their way through college,
soliciting funds for the annual purchases of new books for
the library, gathering gifts for new buildings (a gym, an
enlarged library, three dormatories, a science building, and a
classroom building) and putting it all together were the sus-
tained requirements and inner satisfactions of sixteen long
years prior to accreditation, the sacrificial labors and gener-
ous gifts of many friends went into our crucible of accredition
in 1965.
it was an exciting moment in december 1965 when i was
able to telephone a beeper message of victory over wcon
radio station by previous arrangement with two of our own
graduates, bobby and John foster, from the meetings of the
southern association in richmond, Virginia, it was beamed to
the students and faculty of piedmont college and to all the
people of northeast georgia. the good news came through a
littel before three o'clock, later i learned that the regular
radio program was interrupted with this special announce-
ment from the president of piedmont college, over seventy
percent of the teachers and principals in the area were our
alumni and understandably eager for accreditation news,
classes, study halls, and buses were all stopped to hear the
good news, that "piedmont college is fully accredited."
in december 1975, after ten more years of constant effort
to upgrade every part of our program of quality education,
the southern association of colleges and schools voted affir-
matively on the reaffirmation of accreditation for piedmont
college, every professor worked diligently on the self-study
and every student cooperated in good spirit on this exhaus-
tive project, all shared personally and together in this
glorious celebration, what better way could there be for us to
join in the bicentennial! our nation depends on the whole-
some character and intelligent adventure of educated young
people.
"our fathers' god. to thee,
author of liberty,
to thee we sing;
long may our land be bright
with freedom's holy light;
protect us by they might,
great god, our king. "

ihe end of another school year.
You know, ever since we first opened our doors, back in 1911, we've
been watching the young people of Toccoa go through school and on to other
things. Like college. And work.
And we've grown up with them all. We've helped young people continue
their education with loans to get them through those college years. And we've
helped young families get started and helped them plan for the future. Helped
them with things like personalized checks and a safe place to keep their money.
And car loans. And loans for their first homes.
We're proud of the part we've played.
So come in and see us . . . and let us help
you with your banking needs.
We like helping young people ... at the

every year piedmont college publishes a yearbook, in fact, every college,
high school, and many elementary schools publish a yearbook, because oik
the tremendous amount of material and number of styles used, some
duplication is unavoidable.

as editor of the '76 yonahian, i've put my best work into making this book
well worth keeping for your future, if there is anything between these covers
you disagree with, please remember that the job of editor was open to any-
one who wanted it.
Aft
i don't know who wrote that immortal line, "no man is
an island . . .", but they are right, this yearbook
couldn't have been put together without the help and
understanding of many of my friends and even a few
of my enemies, those of you that helped me know
who you are, i hope, i'm not going to list names
because i'd probably forget somebody, and if it's one
thing i don't need, it's somebody else after me.
i hope you enjoy it.
