Office of the President:
JAMES E. WALTER, President

THE PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Telephone 723-3691

The year of 19 73-74 may well be remembered on the pages of
history as the crossroads of new maturity for the wealthiest
people of the world, the people of the United States of America.
The rally call was "Energy Crisis." The trigger event was the
Israeli-Arab War, resulting in the cut off of all oil from .
Arabian countries as a result of our support of the three million
Jews in their conflict with one-hundred million Arabs.

In the spring of 1969 a group of seventeen of us from Piedmont
College visited the rich oil fields of Iran on our 49 day world
tour as a history class. We talked with the native leaders about
the advantages of world trade. We needed and appreciated their
God given abundance of crude oil. They needed and appreciated our
American talents of scientific agriculture and modern medicine.
World events beyond our control have altered these desirable
exchanges for a season. Now we are launched on "Project Independence
by 19 80."

In our homes and at the college we turned down thermostats
to 68, and our physicians advised us that we are the healthier
for doing it. On the highways we have learned to limit our speed
to 50 miles per hour, and the accident death rates over the
Thanksgiving weekend came down.

Scientists have dreamed and worked for generations on the
challenge of harnessing desert heat into cubes that could be
packaged like coal and released like a steaming radiator wherever
we need warmth in winter. Now the minds and resources of research
are moving forward with vigor at a tempo of national urgency.

In the meantime we have experienced again the satisfactions
of "sacrificing a little" so that no one in our land needs to be
cold. In our college family we have been glad to cooperate with
the requests and regulations of government. I appreciate the
understanding and good spirit of students who were asked to
conserve heat in their rooms and to guard against the waste of
hot water in the showers .

Doing what we can to meet a genuine need of society provides
a deep satisfaction in the heart of each person who lives Gratefully
and with Concern for Others in God's great family.

Sincerely,

(* ^7^^

Basketball

All the snickering about Piedmont College
Basketball is now deceased. During the
past two years Piedmont has set a national
record for the most consecutive losses which
was 52 in a row. This record was brought
to a halt in our opening game this season
when we defeated Toccoa Bible College
81-77. The team is comprised of many
hard working and talented athletes who
have spent many long hours practicing to
bring the losing streak to an end. The
team members are Allen Pritchett, Troy
Collins, Phil White, Lamar Turner, Ron
Moss, Kenny Edwards, Eddie Ragsdale,
Ronnie Parsons, Johnny Gardiner, Ronnie
Gardiner, Grant Keener, Mike Gillum,
Ronnie Hunter, and Dale Bradshaw, man-
ager.

gWi kiniwwl

Johnny Gardiner, one of the smallest pivot men around. Instilled in this young man is the uncanny
ability to guard. Johnny dazzles many crowds as well as opponents with his fine moves.

Mike Gillum, a player whose biggest asset can be described in three words: hustle, hustle,
hustle. Strong ambition and tremendous desire make Mike the great competitor that he is.

Lamar Turner, floor-leader throughout the season. His ability to drive coupled with his sharp
out-side shooting boosts the Lions score in many games.

Kenny Edwards, the man that provides the versatility that enables the team to keep together in key
situations. His fine outside snooting and consistant rebounding proves that Kenny is a valuable
asset to the team.

Ronnie Hunter, a steady ballplayer and the type of good sportsman that every coach looks for.
Aggressiveness combined with 100% effectiveness is the name of Ronnie's game.

HOMECOMING

Piedmont College observed its
annual homecoming in January
during half-time of the game with
North Georgia College. The gym
was packed with not only students
and faculty, but many outside
team supporters as well.

During the half-time ceremonies,
Deb Lenior, last year's queen,
crowned Wanda Humphries,
Homecoming Queen for 1974.
Wanda was escorted by Mike
Cox. The Homecoming Court in-
cluded Gail Mote, escorted by
Mark Alley; Debbie Hollaway,
escorted by Larry Wood; and
Cookie Mize, escorted by Roger
Sheppard.

54

WHO'S WHO 1974

Each year the college pays tribute to several students who have made outstanding contributions
to our school. This year six students were nominated by the faculty and administration. Pied-
mont College is proud to present these students in Who's Who Among Students in American
Colleges and Universities. They have shown qualities of leadership, scholarship, and depend-
ability.

Each nominee furnished biographical material for publication in the current directory. Certifi-
cates of membership are presented to the nominees on Honor's Day. The students voted to
receive this honor for 1974 are Mike Gillum, Roger Cook, Sandra Blackwell, Karen Anderson,
Jana Cave, and Diane Sexton.

J. S. GREEN SOCIETY

Being a member of the J. S. Green Society is one of the highest honors an indi-
vidual can obtain after pledging the society. After becoming a member one has all
the rights and privileges that any other member in the club possesses. Becoming
a green brother means that the individual believes in Piedmont College. He not
only backs the school, but he backs his brothers' decisions. He believes in the
truth of brotherhood and community. Each brother is a strong INDIVIDUAL in mind,
soul, and body who believes in keeping the J. S. GREEN SOCIETY the number
one club on campus.

CHESS CLUB

72

The Chess Club has a new beginning at the start of
each quarter and this year has been no exception. In
Spring quarter, there were three schools which be-
longed to our new league: Stephens County High
School, Rabun Gap High School, and Piedmont Col-
lege. There are many reasons why members have
joined the club. First, we have a common love -
chess. Many good friends have been made during play,
There is a minimum of time and expense to participate,
Spectators are invited to watch any game. The Chess
Club is located in the library. Any officer will be
more than happy to help anyone who has questions.

You know, ever since we first opened our doors, back in 1911, we've
been watching the young people of Toccoa go through school and on to other
things. Like college. And work.

And we've grown up with them all. We've helped young people continue
their education with loans to get them through those college years. And we've
helped young families get started and helped them plan for the future. Helped
them with things like personalized checks and a safe place to keep their money.
And car loans. And loans for their first homes.

We're proud of the part we've played.

So come in and see us . . . and let us help
