FOREWORD

In the making of this the 1942 Yonahian
the staff has not endeavored to present a
complete review of the past year but only
to include the threads that will bring to our
minds endearing thoughts and pictures.

DEDICATION

It is our privilege to dedicate this issue of
the Yonahian to Mr. W. Baxter Smith.
In his thirty-two years at Piedmont he has
been faithful in service and understanding
in spirit.

THE ORCHESTRA

The "Owls" have had a more successful year than ever before. They
have had many engagements besides playing for all the Piedmont dances.
They have also presented several programs over WRLC in Toccoa and
assisted by transcription in the salute to Habersham County over WSB.
They were unfortunate in that some of their members found it necessary
to withdraw from school but they have carried on admirably. We feel
sure they will continue to grow in their contribution to campus life.

Although the 1942 baseball season is in its infancy at the time the Yonahian goes to
press we have had a preview of what to expect from the powerful Piedmont nine for
the 1942 season. In their first game of the season played away from home against
Newberry College, S. C. the lions lost a bitterly fought game. The next day, 2nd of
April, the Lions opened their home season against the highly touted "Bluestockings" of
Presbyterian College, and the Piedmonters under the able coaching of "Coach" King
handed the visitors a beautiful "whitewashing" to the tune of Piedmont 3 Presbyterian
0. The fine squad on the field under Coach King should carry the Green and Gold to
one of the best years ever recorded in Piedmont baseball history.

With "Love, Idealism, and Friendship" as its motto, Theta Zeta Phi Literary Society has
continued to be a vital force in the life of Piedmont College. Miss Corian Stambaugh,
its sponsor, and Mary Dana, its mascot, were presented at the annual reception for new
students. The society, with its brother, the J. S. Greens, sponsored a Valentine dance.
Its twenty-second anniversary program was one of the highlights of the spring quarter.
This year has been one of outstanding cooperation and interest on the part of its
members.

Gamma Chi Literary Society holds sincerity of beliefs, cooperation with friends, and
fairness in all dealings as ideals for a truly great organization. Gamma Chi has always
played a vital part in Piedmont's social and educational life. She always does everything
possible to welcome the new girls to Piedmont and never has she been more active than
this year, with a membership of forty-eight girls.

For the ninth consecutive year Mrs. Ruth Ford Atkinson was elected sponsor, and
little Judy Griggs of Mt. Airy was elected mascot for this year. With these leaders,
Gamma Chi will continue to march forward.

The J. S. Green Literary Society in the year 1942 celebrated it's 44th anniversary.
Founded practically with Piedmont itself, the "Greens" have worked and planned for
the furthering of that spirit and quality of students so essential to the life of any college.
The members of the Green Society have sponsored club programs which have been
educational and entertaining to each and every member. Among the speakers appearing
before the "Greens" in the 1941-42 school year were men experienced in varied fields.
"Voices of Experience" in the legal, travel, medical world, and many others have made
each gathering in the "Green Room" an hour to be remembered.

The Protropian Literary Society was organized in 1898. Since it was organized, it has
stood for the highest ideals that can be obtained. Fraternal fellowship, cooperation, and
friendliness prevail among all members, and loyalty to the society and to Piedmont is a
distinctive characteristic of every true Protropian.

The Protropians exchanged programs and social events with their sister, the Gamma
Chi Society, during the year. These functions were enjoyed by all concerned and they
served as a means of bringing the societies closer together.

Programs of especial interest by the Protropians this year included: A Reception,
An Anniversary Program, A Radio Program, and a Formal Dance.
