- Description:
- Two typescript documents by Samuel Spahr Laws written on occasion of a competitive essay contest sponsored by the National Education Association concerning the integration of religion into public education. Laws begins his essay by defining the difference between natural religion and Christianity as a revealed religion. He then reviews the relationship between the religion and state as expressed in the Roman Empire during the early rise of Christianity and at the time of the founding of the United States. From this he argues that natural religion should be the religion of the state and suggests means for integrating natural religion into state schools. The first document is the submitted copy (with typescript copy of the announcement letter to patrons, written by D. W. Springer) and the second document is a draft of the essay containing manuscript annotations by Laws, 1915.
