- Letters from James Woodrow to Joseph Ruggles Wilson: requesting advice on means to increase his chances of filling the Chair of Natural Science at Franklin College [University of Georgia], mentions he is reaching out to others at Jefferson College for support, Lafayette (Ala.), September 15, 1852; concerning his unease over his qualifications and whether he is called to the ministry, Lafayette, Chambers County (Ala.), December 2, 1852; informing Joseph that he has resigned his position at LaFayette [Ala.] and that he has will start teaching at Oglethorpe University, [Midway (Ga.)], January 1, 1853; recounting his travels from Alabama to Georgia after resigning in LaFayette, and discusses details about his new colleagues and classes, Oglethorpe University, [Midway (Ga.)], January 3, 1853; discusses his travel route by sea from Wilmington to Savannah, expresses joy in visiting the Wilson family, discusses his textbooks and classes, describes shells and crabs he observed at a beach in Smithville and reflects on God's decisions in creating the components of a crab, and describes rivers and deltas along the Savannah River (with a handwritten map), Oglethorpe University, [Midway (Ga.)], October 7, 1853; discussing the weather, his concern that the university is too permissive of students, the sermons and preaching of Mr. [Robert Levi] Breck, Oglethorpe University, [Midway (Ga.)], December 24, 1853; responding to his letter about whether he should pursue a pastoral role or continue as a professor and discusses interest in geology and describes books he has read on the subject, Oglethorpe University, [Midway (Ga.)], February 7, 1854.
