- Description:
- Letters from James Woodrow to Jeanie [Janet] Woodrow Wilson concerning his seeking professorship at Franklin College and Oglethorpe University, having taken some advice from Joseph [Ruggles Wilson] about sending a note to Rev. W. W. Pharr, hopes that God will guide him where he goes, and ponders about the possibility of being a lawyer and feels compelled to preach but also unfit, Lafayette, Chambers County (Ala.), November 4, 1852; concerning little news he has heard from Jeanie in recent times, describes in detail an intoxicated student from Charleston who had performed several acts of violence on campus, and his leading a Bible study at a local prison, Oglethorpe University [Midway (Ga.)], March 21, 1853; expressing gratitude for Jeanie’s letter and reassuring her that he has friends, discusses his science lectures with minimal apparatus for experiments, lecturing at the [Southern] Botanico-Medical College in Macon, and considers studying science in Europe but wonders if this in competition with a potential pastoral call, Macon (Ga.), December 9[-10], 1853; concerning the affection of Felie and her continuing health, that Mr. Baker will probably move to Dalton [Alabama], losing his trunk in the Atlantic containing his clothes and letters and finding it again, reception at Oglethorpe with the possibility of him leaving to teach at Athens [Franklin College] (with copy of refusal letter), [Charlotte] Baker’s inquiry about the prospect of Joseph preaching at Independent Presbyterian Church (Savannah, Ga.), describing deliberations over whether to stay or teach at Athens learning that Gov. Johnson nominated him and his votes have increased greatly, and that the Board of Oglethorpe University purchased the house of Mr. Baker, Oglethorpe University [Midway (Ga.)], January 3, 1854; commenting on difficulties he is having at [Oglethorpe], including housing conditions, mismanagement of funds, and relations with other institutions and other Presbyterians, he also considers whether he is called to pastoral ministry, Oglethorpe University [Midway (Ga.)], January 14, 1854; concerning his health, local weather and flora, his hope that Joseph will be called as a pastor, his reception as a teacher, the benefits of studying geology abroad, discusses visiting Chillicothe, his growing affection for Felie Baker, his salary and travel spending habits, and calls from multiple women, Oglethorpe University [Midway (Ga.)], February 1, 1854; concerning his attempt to amuse himself by playing the flute, discusses and quotes from a letter by Mrs. [Charlotte] Baker he received detailing how Felie and Cliff have adapted after their move, and calls from Mrs. Orme, Oglethorpe University [Midway (Ga.)], April 3, 1854; informing her that he is sure there is not a risk in Joseph [her husband] going to New Orleans and hopes he is appointed Commissioner to the [66th (Old School) Presbyterian Church U.S.A. General] Assembly, expresses that he is often lonely and wishes Jeanie to be near, concerned about how Felie will regard him soon and discusses some of her physical appearance; after reading letters from Jeanie he expresses joy that he is loved by her and now has reservation about Joseph going to New Orleans but hopes she is looking forward to going to Buffalo instead on behalf of the Presbytery [of Ohio], Oglethorpe University [Midway (Ga.)], April 10[-13], 1854; discusses and quotes a letter from Mrs. [Charlotte] Baker concerning his relationship with Felie and the pain he feels, a letter from A. B. McCorkle concerning his appointment as principal of Presbyterian Collegiate Female Institute, and a letter from the Board of Directors for the Institute with salary amount and his intention to decline the appointment, Oglethorpe University [Midway (Ga.)], April 29, 1854; concerning Joseph’s visit to Georgia, quotes and discusses with regret a letter from Felie about marriage postponement but hopes this may entail Joseph staying longer and congregants hearing him preach on more than one occasion (and hopes their family may move close), discusses his thoughts about being single for so long while expectant to be married soon, a recent headache Felie has been suffering, securing rooms in Midway, and that the Chief Justice of Georgia [Joseph Henry Lumpkin] informed him that the trustees at Athens [Franklin College] are looking to him, Oglethorpe University [Midway (Ga.)], July 10, 1854.
