The students who help make Columbia Seminary what it is are
listed in this section of the seminary's five-part catalog. It will also
prove a handy reference for the faculty and staff members, Board
of Directors, and the 1972 graduating class.

Fees, financial assistance, and housing arrangements are dis-
cussed in helpful detail. The seminary's calendar for the 1972-74
academic years is on page twenty-three, and a directory for cor-
respondence with the various officers of the seminary is on the
last page, along with a guide to the other sections of the catalog.

This brochure may help you know Columbia Seminary a little
better until you have a chance to visit personally with some of the
persons listed in it.

Columbia Theological Seminary, a seminary of the Presbyterian
Church, U.S., is operated and controlled by the Synods of Alabama,
Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and South Carolina through a Board
of Directors. It is an accredited member of the American Associ-
ation of Theological Schools.

The approximate cost for educating each student for a year is

The fee for the Hospital Practicum is $15.00.

All fees are payable on the first day of the quarter, or during the
quarter by arrangement only. Fees listed for room and board are
subject to change.

Other Expense

Each student is required to have some form of hospitalization
insurance acceptable to the faculty. Students may purchase the

group insurance which is normally offered to the student body or
they may purchase insurance through other sources.

All graduating students will be required to pay a Diploma Fee of
$10.00.

The amount of money needed for books, travel, recreation and
incidental expenses will vary according to the habits of the stu-
dent. A Book Store is operated on campus and students receive
discounts on purchases made there.

HOUSING
Unmarried Students

Dormitory housing is available for unmarried students. Most of
the rooms are for single occupancy, many of them have con-
necting baths. All rooms are fully furnished with the exception of
linens. Laundry facilities are provided.

Married Students Without Children

Suites of two rooms with private bath are available for married
students without children. These suites are fully furnished with
the exception of linens. Laundry facilities are provided. There are
no facilities for cooking.

Married Students With Children

One, two and three bedroom unfurnished apartments are avail-
able for married students with children. The rent for these apart-
ments is from $65 to $85 per month depending on the size of the
apartment. Applications for apartments should be made as early
as possible.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Columbia Seminary attempts to provide financial assistance for
any Master of Divinity student who is in financial need.

The seminary Financial Aid Officer will consult with any student
who wishes to discuss his financial situation. After consultation,
students may apply for financial aid. This financial assistance may
take the form of grants, work scholarships or loans. The Financial
Aid Committee considers each request separately and attempts to
make the wisest use of monies designated for financial assistance.

The student financial aid program is based upon the following
Principles of Student Financial Aid for Theological Education which

have been approved by the American Association of Theological
Schools.

1. The primary purposes of a financial aid program for theologi-
cal students are to assist in their educational preparation for
church occupations, and to make possible the enrollment of
promising candidates by providing assistance to students who
demonstrate financial need.

2. The total amount of financial assistance offered a student
should not exceed the amount of his need.

3. Financial need is defined as the difference between the total
cost of attending a particular institution and the amount of
the resources available to the student.

4. Financial assistance consists of grants, loans, and employment.

5. The family of a student, whether the student is unmarried or
married, is expected to make every reasonable effort to as-
sist the student with his educational expenses.

6. The student himself is expected to provide a major share of
his expense through savings and other assets, through sum-
mer employment, and through term-time work where feasi-
ble.

7. In the case of a married student with no children, the spouse
who has completed his or her formal education is normally
expected to be gainfully employed. The spouse's total earn-
ings are to be considered as part of the total family income.
Because of the importance of this source of income, student
couples who hope for financial aid should not normally an-
ticipate that increased aid will offset loss of income resulting
from the wife having children.

8. The student's home church and presbytery should assist with
the costs of his preparation for a church occupation in cases
where the student demonstrates financial need and if such
assistance is consistent with denominational policy.

9. Since the principles of Christian stewardship apply to all
Christians, candidates should make provision in their financial
estimates for gifts to churches and charities out of their own
earnings.

10. Financial assistance is granted on the basis of need on a year-
to-year basis, with re-application and review each year.

Second- and third-year students may expect to receive some
remuneration from supply preaching as it is available. This is super-
vised by the Director of Field Education. Normally, first year stu-
dents are not allowed to supply pulpits.
