- Unused model of the Olympic torch used during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, GA. The torch burner mechanism was designed by Dr. Sam Shelton, associate professor of mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech. Shelton also acted as consultant on the design issues with regard to the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics torch, which was designed by Malcolm Grear Designers. Torch weighs roughly 3.5 pounds and is designed to hold enough fuel to burn for 45 minutes, emitting a flame robust enough to withstand wind, rain, and the other elements runners might encounter. Twenty-two aluminum "reeds" represent the 22 cities that had hosted the Olympics as of 1996. The wood handle is of Georgia pecan wood, donated by Georgia farmers.
