FIVE ALUMNI NAMED TO
OUTSTANDING YOUNG MEN

Five Oglethorpe College alumni have been named for
inclusion in the 1%9 edition of Outstanding Young Men
of America . The honored are Mr. Doug Alexander, Roger
G)uch, Eric Scharff, and Ted Bayley all of Atlanta and
Wayne Dobbs of Washington, D.C.

Doug Alexander, Class of 1968, is currently employed at
Oglethorpe as Director of Public Relations and Continu-
ing Education. Roger Couch, '61, is the highly successful
basketball coach at Druid Hills High School. Eric Scharff
is President of the Walton Manufacturing Company, a
clothing manufacturing company in Loganville and a 1%3
graduate of Oglethorpe. Ted Bayley serves as Assistant
Director of Field Service for the Atlanta Area Boy Scouts.
Wayne Dobbs is the head basketball coach at George
Washington University and is a former Oglethorpe athlete
and a 1961 graduate.

The Oglethorpe Alumni Association meets the second
Monday of each month at 7:30 in the Private Dining
Room at the College Center. Alumni are welcomed and
encouraged to attend.

FACULTY NEWS

SPOTLIGHTING W. ELMER GEORGE

OGLETHORPE GRADUATE -CLASS OF 1939

Mr. George is presently the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR of
the GEORGIA MUNICIPAL ASSOCIATION and has held
this position for twelve years. In this capacity he works
for and with every mayor in Georgia. Mr. George began
this job with four basic aims tax equalization, ridding
the state of the fee system, balanced representation in
the state legislature, and consolidation of inefficient units
of local governments. Thus far, he has accomplished three
of these goals. The fourth, consolidation of inefficient
units of local governments, is in legislation at the present
time and should become a reality in the near future.

Mr. George has been a member for eight years of the
Community Facilities Committee for the National League
of Cities and for twelve years the Director of the Resolu-
tion Committee of the National League of Cities.

Garland F. Pinholster, Dean of Administration, and Edward
M. Garrett, Dean of the College attended the American
Association of Higher Education meeting in Chicago,
Illinois in March.

Dr. David N. Thomas, Associate Professor in History, has
put together a program of Urban Studies. This program
has not yet been approved by the Oglethorpe Faculty
and Administration but it seems to lend itself to contem-
porary curriculum changes which are being made in
colleges all over the country.

Oglethorpe will again offer a summer workshop for ele-
mentary teachers and a seminar for secondary teachers.
The workshop and seminar will run concurrently during
the first term of summer school (beginning June 9th) and
they will serve in lieu of the student teaching requirement
in a planned program designed to provide professional
certifications.

Carol George Sellers, daughter and 1963 graduate of
Oglethorpe is married to Lt. Woody Sellers. Lt. Sellers is
currently serving in the U.S. Air Force in the Phillipines.

STUDENT NEWS

APO Service Fraternity has recently donated portable
bleachers to Oglethorpe for use at the tennis and soccer
matches.

Phi Alpha Fraternity sponsored an Easter Egg Hunt for the
Methodist Children's Home in Decatur, Georgia, on the
Oglethorpe Campus, March 24.

Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity will receive their Charter in
April.

Kappa Delta Sorority's formal installation will take place
April 11, 12, and 13. National officers of the sorority and
Kappa Delta Chapters from colleges in the Southeast will
attend the festivities.

The Oglethorpe Players' presented Neil Simon's "Barefoot
in the Park" March 13, 14, and 15 in the Oglethorpe audi-
torium. The play was an overwhelming success and
President Vonk commented that it was "the best college
theatrical production that he had ever seen."

ALUMNEWS

Emmett S. McDowell, Jr. (1919) is a Certified Public
Accountant in Decatur, Georgia.

Cammie Lee Kendrick (1929) is the Business Office Mana-
ger for the Ponce de Leon Infirmary in Atlanta, Georgia.

George M. Talbott (1944) is a Fuel and Lubrication Engi-
neer for the Standard Oil Company of California. He is a
Fuel and Lubrication Engineer and Consultant to Planta-
tions, Contractors and Industries in Hawaii.

Mary Bearden Cazalas (1954) is a practicing attorney in
Louisiana. In 1966-67 she was awarded for the best Com-
ment in the Loyola Law Review and has three American
Jurisprudence Awards. Mrs. Cazalas is also a member of
Cardinal Key National Honorary Fraternity; Treasurer
and Vice-president Phi Delta Delta international Legal
Fraternity Alpha Zeta Chapter; and member of Phi
Sigma Biological Society. As a Registered Nurse, she
keeps in touch with nursing by working in a local hospital
for one month every year.

Kay Kibler Chambers (1954) is teaching the seventh grade
at Moreland School in the Atlanta Public School System.

Ronald W. Gann (1954) is the Vice President and Trust
Officer for the C & S National Bank in Atlanta, Georgia.
His work includes the Real Estate Division Trust
Department.

Eloise H. Greer (1954) is the Librarian for the Laurel Hills
Elementary School in Fulton County, Georgia.

Madge T. Jackson (1954) is teaching the second grade at
College Street School in Hapeville, Georgia.

Reverend Thomas G. Morris, Sr. (1954) is the Pastor of
the First Presbyterian Church in Russellville, Arkansas
and Pottsvi lie-Bethany Associate Reformed Presbyterian
Church in Pottsville, Arkansas.

Dorothy F. Myers (1954) is teaching the first grade at
Tullwaters School in Decatur, Georgia.

Jewell Boath Palmer (1954) is teaching social studies at
East Cobb Junior High School in Cobb County, Georgia.

Gladys T. Peck (1954) is presently working in the Atlanta
School System as Coordinator-Elementary Physical Edu-
cation. This position includes coordinating physical
education activities of 124 elementary schools in the
Atlanta School System.

Elizabeth B. Snead (1954) is a Missionary for LJnited
Methcxiist Church. At the present time she is located in
Singapore.

Donald E. Zurek (1954) is working in the Marketing De-
partment for the Southern Bell Telephone Company in
Atlanta, Georgia.

Ted D. Bayley (1958) has been promoted to Assistant
Scouts Executive with the Atlanta Area Council of Boy
Scouts of America.

William B. Christian (1959) is the Field Director of the
Boy Scouts of America South Florida Council, consist-
ing of administrative work and supervising a youth pro-
gram of 12,000 boys in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami.

Jack A. Etheridge, Jr. (1959) is currently the Product Sales
Manager for Hoffman-LaRoche, Inc. in Nutley, New Jersey.

Charles T. Ingram, Jr. (1959) is the Senior Aeromechanics
Engineer for Lockheed-Georgia Company in Marietta,
Georgia. His work consists of performing theoretical
analyses and data reduction pertaining to aircraft loads.

Joseph C. Levin, Jr. (1959) is the Principal of the Clayton
County School in Georgia.

James Anthony Paredes (1961) will begin work in Septem-
ber 1969 as an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at
Florida State University at Tallahassee, Florida.

John D. Kuiken (1962) is the Director of Corporate Rela-
tions for the Independent Colleges of Southern California.

Dennis Kerr (1964) was married to the former Judine
Dapper of Chicago, Illinois on November 30, 1968. Mem-
bers of the wedding party included Mr. R. 1. Doyal (1960)
and Mr. Lynn Drury (1963). Mr. Kerr is a Technical Rep-
resentative for the Corn Products Company in the Phila-
delphia area.

David S. Davies (1965) has been promoted to Director of
Activities with the Atlanta Area Council, Boy Scouts of
America.

Larry Shattles (1967) is now in advertising sales with Life
Magazine.

DECEASED

Thompson McConnahaye Wells (1927) passed away in
January 1969.

Trent A. Allen (1941) passed away March 10, 1969. Mr.
Allen was an active member of the Alumni Association
and Booster Club and his participation will be missed.

OGLETHORPE ADVANCES
TO NATIONAL PLAYOFFS

The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels finished the 1968-69
basketball campaign with an impressive 23-4 record and
a trip to the national college division tournament at
Evansville, Indiana.

Oglethorpe captured the South Atlantic Regional Tourna-
ment at Norfolk, Virginia by defeating Old Dominion Col-
lege and Mt. St. Mary's College on March 7-8. Advancing
to the national finals, where only eight teams throughout
the country were still eligible for the national champion-
ship, Oglethorpe lost to Kentucky Wesleyan, who went on
to win the national championship.

Congratulations should go to Coaches Carter and Norwood
and especially seniors, Earl Blair, Mike Dahl, |im Hoggarth,
Doug Cole, and jerry Lee for their fine efforts in producing
one of the best teams in Oglethorpe's history.

MANAGEMENT OF PEOPLE SEMINAR

Mr. William Egerton, professor of management at Ogle-
thorpe College, will present a seminar entitled "Manage-
ment of People." Professor Egerton a highly successful
management and business consultant will conduct the
eight week seminar beginning April 30. This seminar is
conducted by the Department of Continuing Education at
Oglethorpe College and is the second time the seminar
has been offered.

? ALUMNI DAY DRAWING ?

As a special added attraction on May 3, an ALUMNI
DAY DRAWING is scheduled at the 4:30 Buffet. Gifts
have been donated by Oglethorpe Alumni, President's
Council Members, Trustees and Friends for this special
drawing. Every alumnus will receive further details in the
near future. In the meantime, make your plans to attend
the Alumni Day Buffet.
