OGLETHORPE ANNOUNCES
TWO NEW TRUSTEES

Two members of Oglethorpe's President's Council have
been elected as members of the Oglethorpe College Board of
Trustees, Dr. Paul Kenneth Vonk, President of Oglethorpe,
announced.

One of the men added to the Board is Mr. Earl Dolive,
Executive Vice President of Genuine Parts and President of
Balkamp, Inc. Mr. Dolive is an Emory alumnus and a past
President and General Chairman of the Georgia Arthritis Foun-
dation. He is a Kiwanian and attends the Peachtree Presby-
terian Church in Atlanta.

The second new Trustee is Mr. Edward D. Lord, current
Vice-President of Life Insurance Company of Georgia. Mr.
Lord became a resident of Atlanta when he joined Life of
Georgia as a Group Manager in 1957. He is Chairman of the
Georgia Health Insurance Council, Vice-President of the Atlanta
Kiwanis, and a past President of the Atlanta Quarterback
Club. A graduate of Michigan State University, Mr. Lord is a
member of the Board of Directors of both the Sales and
Marketing Executives-International and the Leukemia Society-
Georgia Chapter.

ELECTED

Oglethorpe College President Paul Kenneth Vonk announced
the election of the 1970 officers of the Oglethorpe College
President's Council. By unanimous vote, elected were:

Mr. Rodney Cook, Representative with Guardian Life

Goldstein, Fraser, and Murphy.
Mr. J. Donally Smith, Attorney associated with Jones, Bird

and Howell.
Dr. J. Grant Wilmer, noted Atlanta cardiologist.

DEVELOPMENT CAMPAIGN NEWS

ARTHUR HOWELL

John C. Spencer, Chairman of the Development Committee, spot-
lighted Arthur Howell in his February newsletter. This distinguished
Princeton graduate and Atlanta lawyer has done many noteworthy
things for Oglethorpe as Trustee but none so awesome as his having
obtained the $250,000 anonymous challenge matching pledge. The
Development Committee continues an all-out effort to meet the chal-
lenge and Dr. Pinholster, Dean of Administration, has begun a program
of involvement with the students and faculty at Oglethorpe to enlist
their cooperation in securing the funds to realize this $250,000 grant.

It seems fitting that we spotlight a Princeton man this month in
view of Thornwell Jacobs' dream to produce a Princeton of the South.
Arthur Howell (former Chairman of Oglethorpe's Board of Trustees) has
the remarkable distinction of attending Harvard too; after which he was
admitted to practice law in 1942. His firm's name is Jones, Bird and
Howell. His son "Speed" (Arthur, Jr.) recently joined the firm fresh
from Princeton where he was an outstanding member of the varsity
tennis team. Another son, Richard, currently plays for Princeton. Tennis
has been a family affair at the Howell house as Arthur, wife Carrie, and
all six children have racked up enough trophies to fill one room of their
home on Tuxedo Road. Carrie gets all the credit for tutoring the clan
on their backyard court. Arthur is a director and counselor for Atlantic
Steel Company; Vice President, Director of Creomulsion Company and
Southwest Investors, Inc.; the General Chairman of United Appeal in
1955, and a Trustee of Atlanta Speech School, Morehouse, Westminster
and Princeton to mention a few of his many activities. He is the past
President of the Atlanta Lawyers Club, a Presbyterian (deacon), mem-
ber of Phi Beta Kappa and the Piedmont, Commerce and Capital City
Clubs. In the words of his loyal secretary, Mrs. Thompson, "In addition,
he does practice law."

victories in borrowed gyms and
practiced in their famous "cracker
box" located under (yes, down un-
der) Lupton Hall . . .

Back when the coach wore a flat
top haircut and bow tie . . .

Back when Steve Schmidt won the
office of President of the Boosters'
Club every year . . .

Pat Stephens

these two youngsters were both
Oglethorpe students and athletes.
They cracked their skulls against
the gym wall every day learning
things like the Wheel, aggressiveness,
discipline, continuity, spirit, and
how to be a winner!

Pat Stephens began a training pro-
gram with Goodbody & Company
in Atlanta on March 2, 1970, to
become a Registered Representative.
He will complete the program on
September 2, 1970. Pat and his
family reside in Atlanta and he and
wife, Sandra, keep busy these days
with their 1 1 month old daughter,
Susan. Pat left a very successful
basketball coaching career at the
University of Georgia to join Good-
body.

Johnny Guthrie

On the other hand, John Guthrie is finishing up his first season
as Assistant Basketball Coach at the University of Georgia. He
has played an important role in the success of this year's
basketball program at Georgia. John's wife, Angela, is a grad-
uate of Georgia State University and is currently teaching at
Oglethorpe Elementary School in Athens.

Both Pat and John are not only highly respected in their pro-
fessions but also as community leaders. They are winners in
the truest sense while wearing Oglethorpe's label.

Oglethorpe College takes pride in saluting these two out-
standing alumni.

BOOSTER CLUB'S

PAST PRESIDENTS HONORED

ALUMNI NEWS

Oglethorpe College Student Center was the setting this
month for a dinner gathering together all past presidents of
the Oglethorpe College Booster Club. The Booster Club itself
is composed of alumni and friends who wish to give special
support to athletics at Oglethorpe. The "Past President's"
list includes Mr. Ed Copeland, Mr. Creighton Perry, Mr.
Howard Thranhardt, Mr. Ansel Paulk, Mr. Otis Jackson, Mr.
Steve Schmidt, Mr. Marshall Asher and Mr. Bob Boggus,
The present Booster Club leader is Mr. Mack Henderson.

A plaque was presented to Dr. Garland Pinholster following
the dinner which is a framed enlargement of an Atlanta maga-
zine story concerning the 1963 Oglethorpe College basketball
team that won third place in the NCAA National Tourna-
ments. It was after this victorious season that then Coach
Garland Pinholster was invited to oversee the United States
basketball team competing in the Pan-American games in
Brazil.

MARQUIS F. CALMES - '21 - suffered a "coronary" upon
his return to Hawaii on January 5th, and was confined
to the hospital for thirty days.

JAMES M. STAFFORD, JR. - '24 - retired from Kansas
City Power & Light Company in 1966, after twenty
years and following twenty-one years at Georgia Power.
The week after his retirement he joined Loretto in Kan
sas City as Director of Community Relations. His daugh-
ter, Frances, and her family of five children, live nearby
in Kansas City.

J. W. CROUCH - '29 - and his wife live in Albany, Georgia,
where he is a Certified Public Accountant and maintains
farming interests. The Crouch's son, John Thomas, is
serving in the Peace Corps in South Africa.

GEORGINE AKINS PINDAR - '46 - completed studies for
Ph. D. in Music Education at George Peabody in Nash-
ville, Tennessee, in August, 1968. Mr. and Mrs. Pindar
currently make their home in Atlanta, Georgia.

LAWRENCE M. LIPPMAN, JR. - '54 - teaches at the grad-
uate school level at Webster College in St. Louis, Mis-
souri. In addition, he writes book reviews for St. Louis
Post-Dispatch, lectures and guides for St. Louis National
Trust for Historic Preservation.

JULIA J. TERRY - '54, - Tucker, Georgia, has retired after
teaching for twenty-four years in the DeKalb County
Elementary School System.

AMY BENSON LESLIE - '56, - her husband, their four
daughters and one son, live in Gaffney, South Carolina,
where Mrs. Leslie is employed as Financial Secretary for
the First Baptist Church.

JOHN HARMS - '58 - is attending the Graduate School of
Education, University of Virginia, for a Masters Degree
in Guidance and Counseling. The graduate study is being
done through the Marine Corps Advance Degree program
and upon completion, Major Harms will return to active
duty.

F. F. SHIPTON - '58 - plans to retire June 5, 1970, from
Fulton County Public School System. This will be Mr.
Shipton's second retirement, his first one being from
the United States Army. The Shiptons' son, Frank, Jr.,
who once attended Oglethorpe, is a second lieutenant in
the Army stationed at Fort Walters, Texas.

ETHEL LAW '62 presently serves as recreation director
for the City of Shelbyville, Delaware, where she, her
husband, their daughter and their sons make their home.

VIRGINIA BREMER DORNBOS - '64 - announces the birth
of a second daughter, Catherine Grace, on November 1 1 ,
1969. The family is residing in Marietta, where Mr.
Dornbos is employed as training administrator by Lock-
heed Aircraft Company.

JAMES H. BROWN - '65 - is employed in the Engineering
Department of a radio station in Louisville, Kentucky.
Mr. Brown has made plans to enter Louisville Graduate
School of Business Administration this Spring.

ROBERT M. DANNER, JR. - '69 - and his wife became
parents of their first child, a boy, Robert M. Danner III,
on February 10, 1970.

ROBERT D. SMITH - '69 - and his wife announce the birth
of a son, Tyler Van Smith, in January, 1970. The Smiths
currently live in Macon, Georgia, where he is a pro-
fessional tennis player.
