OGLETHORPE COLLEGE FORMS PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL

Oglethorpe College has formed a President's Council to
aid the present and future programs of the College by
counseling and advising the President and other adminis-
trative officials.

The Council has already held several planning meetings
and on May 24, they met officially for the approval of
by-laws and the election of officers. The meeting was held
at "Cranham," the College Home of the President, Dr.
Paul R. Beall.

This is the first time that such a group has been formed
at Oglethorpe. The President's Council will serve as inter-
preters of the College's plans and programs to specific
groups and especially the general public. Each member is
an outstanding business or community leader. They will
also encourage students of character and personality to
apply for admission at Oglethorpe.

Garland F. Pinholster. vice-president for Development
at Oglethorpe, and one of the key men in the actual for-
mation of the Council said: "President Beall and all of us
at Oglethorpe are elated with the wonderful men who have
accepted our invitation to join the Council. They are all
experts in their appointed fields and highly respected in
the community. We will continue to expand the council
with men of this calibre."

The Council will hold biannual meetings.

Oglethorpe Receives Library Gifts

While Oglethorpe College is grow-
ing in student enrollment, faculty, and
campus buildings, the Oglethorpe Li-
brary is expanding also to meet the in-
creasing demands for reading and re-
search materials. Promoting the li-
brary's service to the student body,
alumna Carla G. Hancock, class of '57,
of Atlanta, has initiated a new concept
in annual alumni giving to the College.

Recognizing the need of the library
to delve more completely into depth
with some popular and classic authors.
Miss Hancock consulted with Thomas
W. Chandler, Jr., Oglethorpe Libarian,
in late 1964, and instructed him to
order all of the Jules Vemes books in
print and contribute the set as a gift-in-
kind to the College.

Chandler stated that the library has
received 35 of Vernes' volumes to date,
valued at $55.00, and has a standing
order with the publisher to complete
the set as the books are translated.
Chandler added that this collection is,
to his knowledge, the only complete
set of Vernes in the area.

"For this year's annual contribu-
tion," said Chandler, "Miss Hancock
instructed me to order all the material
we could get on Nathaniel Hawthorne."
He stated that the library has recently
received 16 of these volumes and has
others on order. The entire set is
valued at $75.00.

Commenting on a recent conversa-
tion with Miss Hancock, Chandler said
her current interest is in concentratinc

on completing sets of American au-
thors, with special emphasis on ma-
terials and volumes which are lacking
in this area.

Chandler said Miss Hancock ex-
pressed preliminary interest in com-
pleting the Walt Whitman collection,
but has made no definite decision as
yet for her next project other than the
author will be American. He added
that the library currently has a small
nucleus of the great many of Whit-
man's volumes, but said he knows of
no complete Whitman collection in this
area.

Another recent contribution to the
library. Chandler reported, was an un-
restricted $100.00 gift from Mrs. Wil-
liam S. Bonham of Princeton, N.J. Her
son, David, returns to the College this
fall as a sophomore. Chandler said he
was undecided as yet what books to
purchase with the donation, but in-
dicated strong preference for more re-
search materials.

BREAKING 1966

alized on May 16 when the College
broke ground on a new two million
dollar building project for a student
union building and new dormitories.

Evelyn B. Vaske, '25, currently serving
as Reports and Records Section Chief
in the Central Laboratory of the
State Health Department, was recently
awarded a service pin award and cer-
tificate by Georgia's Governor Carl E.
Sanders for 40 years of long, faithful
and loyal service in the Georgia De-
partment of Public Health. The award
was made at a special ceremony in the
Governor's office.

Woody Brooks, '34, presently serving
his 9th year as Mayor of Andrews,
South Carolina,
has been elected
President of the
Municipalities As-
sociation of South
Carolina, which
represents all of
the state's 253
cities and towns at
the national and
state levels. Hon-
ored at a testimonial given in his be-
half by the town of Andrews. Brooks
was praised for his accomplishments by
South Carolina Governor Robert E.
McNair and several state dignitaries.
Brooks currently serves as president of
the Brooks Veneer Company of An-
drews, South Carolina.
De Sauerre F. Staples, '40, and Mary
E. Staples, '40, report from Temple,
Georgia, where they are actively en-
gaged in church and civic work follow-
ing retirement from full and busy
teaching careers. D. F. Staples, high
school principal, retired in 1962 after
teaching 40 years. A high school Eng-
lish teacher for 37 years, Mary also
retired in 1962. Thev have two mar-
ried daughters and enjoy lavishing their
attention upon three grandchildren.
George D. Liptak, '43, is assistant
principal of Greenwich High School,
Greenwich, Connecticut, where he
taught for ten years before receiving
his current position in 1961. He prev-
iously served as cost accountant for
General Electric following military ser-
vice in World War II as a Japanese
interpreter. George reports that he
hopes to have his children attend Ogle-
thorpe soon.

Mary Hall Swain, '45, was recently
named associate professor of English
at Kennesaw Junior College. She prev-
iously taught high school English for
6 years, was principal of the Marietta
High School for 10 years, and director
of Instruction of the Marietta City
School for 6 years. Currently serving
as director of Instruction and Person-
nel of the Marietta Public School Sys-

tem, Mary's new appointment becomes

effective in September.

Rev. VV. W. "Bill" Satterwhite, '53,

was recently elected president of the
Jonesboro, Georgia Junior Hit;h PTA
for 1966-67.

Connie Joe Nesbitt, '54, has been
named branch manager of the Roswell-
East Andrews of-
fice of Citizens
and Southern Na-
tional Bank. She
is one of two
women at C&S
to be appointed
to the office of
branch manager
in the Atlanta
area. Connie has
been with the bank since 195.5, and
before assuming her new position, was
assistant manager of the Roswell-
Wieuca office. She is a member of
Atlanta Women's Chamber of Com-
merce, and past president of Buckhead
Business and Professional Women's
Club.

Lt. Jim A. Magee (USN), '57, and his
wife announce the birth of a son,
Glenn Alexander Magee, on Easter
Sunday. Currently stationed on the
USS Guadacanal, Jim is scheduled to
be back in Norfolk at the end of June,
and will assist on the primary recovery
ship for Gemini 10 in July. Following
the recovery, Jim is off to the North
Sea for a NATO excursion in August
and September, and hopes to back to
catch a couple basketball games in
the Winter.

Patricia Daniel Palmer, '59, reports
that her husband. Dr. Henry Palmer
has been recently appointed assistant
medical director in charge of clinical
research, in the Bristol laboratory in
Syracuse, New York, where he will
also be teaching in the department of
Pediatrics at Upstate Medical Center.
For the past year, Henry has had a
private practice.

Billy W. Carter, '59, Assistant Coach
at Oglethorpe, and Gayle Langley Car-
ter, '60, announce the birth of a son.
Lance Wilson Carter, on January 28 in
Atlanta. This is the Carters' third child.
Robert W. Loftin, '60, and Penelope
Wilson Loftin, '60, proudly announce
the birth of their first child, Jonathan
David Loftin, on May 17 in Chamblee.
Bob is presently serving as professor of
philosophy at Oglethorpe.
Dw^ht S. Bayley, '61, announces his
engagement to Miss Sarah Jean Atkins
of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They plan
to be married on June 25. Currently

attending Columbia Theological Se-
minary, Dwight will return in the Fall
to complete his studies there.
Carole (George) Sellers, '62, is cur-
rently teaching the first grade in Miami,
Florida. She will shortly join her hus-
band, B. W. "Woody" Sellers, '63, who
is participating in the Officer Training
Program at Lackland Air Force Base.
Before joining the Air Force Woody
was an insurance adjustor for State
Farm Insurance Company in Miami.
Mary Miles, '63, announces her en-
gagement to Gary M. Potter of Atlanta.
They plan to be married on August 7.
Mary is presently employed by the
Cobb County Board of Education.
Lee Daniel, '63, and Gloria F. Early
Daniel, '64, announce the birth of a
son, Anthony Lee Daniel, born April
17 at Pinehurst. North Carolina. Lcc
is presently employed as the District
scout executive in Sanford, North
Carolina. Gloria is currently serving as
a case worker for the Department of
Public Welfare.

Mrs. B. J. Parchman, '64, and her hus-
band announce the birth of a son,
Travis Randall Parchman, on April 12
in San Diego, California. Mr. Parch-
man is presently a postdoctoral fellow
at the University of California at San
Diego.

Rev. Loy Barrett Smith, '65, and Bar-
bara Ann Tally of Phenix City, Ala-
bama were married on June 3 in Co-
lumbus. Barrett is assistant director
of Youth Work of North Georgia Con-
ference of the Methodist Church and
presently attends the Candler School of
Theology at Emory University.
Mary York, '65, and Tom Phillips, a
senior at the Medical College of Geor-
gia in Augusta, were married in early
June. Tom is currently serving his
third summer of research on muscular
dystrophy and will serve his internship
in Atlanta.

Penelope Ann McCulIouch, '65, an-
nounces her engagement to Bobby Lee
Rose of Jasper, Tennessee. They will
be married on August 7 at the Ogle-
thorpe Presbyterian Church. Bob is
now a student at Georgia State College
and is employed by the United States
Gypsum Company in Atlanta. Pene-
lope currently works in the Oglethorpe
librarv as assistant librarian.
Lloyd Wayne Johnson, '66, married
Rebecca Ann Smith of Toccoa in early
June. Rebecca is a graduate of Young
Harris and is employed by the Fulton
National Bank in Atlanta. Wayne was
a star '66 athlete at Oglethorpe, where
he was a member of the varsity basket-
ball and baseball teams.

HOPE AND EUBANKS INDUCTED INTO Oglethorpe Concludes
ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME Great Tennis Season

Lucien (Bird) Hope and Mark B.
(Banty) Eubanks were inducted into
the Oglethorpe Hall of Fame on Satur-
day, May 14.

The formal ceremonies took place
at a noon luncheon of the Oglethorpe
Booster Club, as a part of the Alumni
Day festivities. The Oglethorpe Hall
of Fame which includes such Petrel
greats as Luke Appling and current
basketball coach Garland Pinholster,
made Hope and Eubanks its fifteenth
and sixteenth members.

Hope, who finished at Oglethorpe in
1921, was an outstanding catcher and
battery mate of Dr. L. N. Turk, who
is already a member of the select
group. Hope was also Appling's first
baseball coach at Fulton High School.
Steve Schmidt made the presentation
on behalf of Appling, who was unable
to leave his coaching duties with the
Kansas City Athletics.

Eubanks. '30, is remembered as a
one-man track team at Oglethorpe in
the late twenties and early thirties. The
bantam speedster took part in practic-
ally all of the track and field events
and won honors in many meets. Eu-
banks currently lives in Greenwood.
South Carolina, and was on hand for
his presentation, which was made by
a former classmate, William Perkins,
'29, of Atlanta, an Oglethorpe trustee.

Stephens Named Assistant
Coach at Georgia

Pat Stephens, '59 was recently
named assistant basketball coach at
the University of Georgia. Announce-
ment of Stephens appointment was
made June 20 by Georgia Athletic
Director Joel Eaves. He will assume
his new duties on August 15.

A major force in Adanta area bas-
ketball, Stephens was originally a star
on Brown High School's city cham-
pions in 1954 before joining Garland
Pinholster's '58-'59 Oglethorpe team,
which finished with a 24-1 campaign,
the school's finest one-year record.

George High for 2 years, Stephens
moved to Druid Hills and his teams en-
joyed winning seasons for the past 5
years.

Commenting on Stephen's appoint-
ment to the number two basketball
coaching position at Georgia, Head
Coach Ken Rosmond said, "I have
very high respect for Coach Stephens
and think that he would be a good ad-

dition to any college staff. I think he
is a very able young man."

Stephens is past vice president of
the Atlanta Tipoff Club, and president-
elect for 1966-67. He is just one of the
many former basketball players under
Coach Pinholster who have joined
ranks in top coaching positions.

Rain was the only deterrent in the
happy conclusion of a great season for
the Oglethorpe tennis team.

The Petrel nctters were washed out
of their last two matches with North
Georgia and finished the campaign
with an outstanding 1 6 and 3 record.
Coach John Guthrie's charges took
great pride in the fact that they won
their last 1 1 straight matches without
a defeat. The only blots on the 1966
record was an opening loss with Am-
herst when the boys had a case of
freshmen jitters and two losses on a
Florida trip, one of these to Rollins,
who experienced an undefeated season.

Final statistics show that Joe Den-
nis and Steve Lynn tied for honors in
total matches won with 14 each. Rob-
bie Danner and Clark Raby followed
closely with 13 winning clTorts. Raby
was the most consistent winner by vir-
tue of the fact that he dropped only
two matches all season. Byron Wal-
beck, the Petrel No. 1 man, also had a
respectable 1 1-4 record in matches al-
though he had to sit out the latter part
of the season with ;i sprained ankle.

The Oglethorpe Varsity Tennis Squad posted an impressive 16-3 record this
Spring. Perhaps not as well publicized but a lot prettier are the Girls' Tennis
Squad under the direction of Mrs. Blazena Bieler. The team was formed on
an unofficial basis this season, but it is hoped that the pretty lassies will have

GFIC RECEIVES TWO GRANTS

Oglethorpe College will share in two grants recently made
to the Georgia Foundation for Independent Colleges, Inc.
Presented under the 1966 aid-to-education program, the
grants include a $37,000 gift from the S&H (Sperry and
Hutchinson) Foundation, and a $9,000 gift from the United
States Steel Foundation, Inc.

Brent A. Tozzer, Jr., executive director, received the
grants on behalf of the Georgia Foundation. The grant
presentations were made by S&H district manager Richard
Shipe, and Roy C. Rhodes, Atlanta district manager of
sales for the United States Steel Corporation.

The GFIC is a member of the Independent College
Funds of America, an association of 39 state and regional
private college organizations in the United States. Under
the Foundation's 1966 program, some $2.6 million is being
given to approximately 700 liberal arts colleges, universities
and institutes such as Oglethorpe, and to 21 other organiza-
tions dedicated to teaching and learning in America.

This is the 13th consecutive year in which the U.S. Steel
Foundation has made financial contributions to non-tax-
supported educational organizations in the nation. The com-
bined $46,000 grant made to the Georgia Foundation will
be divided among Oglethorpe and the 8 other member
colleges and institutions in the State.

John Fitten Goldsmith, '28, died
June 12 in Atlanta. At Ogle-
thorpe, Mr. Fitten was a member
of the Boar's Head honorary fra-
ternity and the Kappa Alpha so-
cial fraternity. He retired from
General Motors in 1963.
Joseph William Yates, '36, died
recently in Fort Pierce, Florida.
John M. Chesney, '39, passed
away April 24 in Houston, Texas,
after a short period of illness. A
former star athlete at Oglethorpe
and member of Alpha Lambda
Tau, Chesney served five years
with the Army Corps of Engi-
neers; three years overseas
(Africa, Italy, France) with the
rank of Major. At the time of his
death, Chesney was employed by
the Graver Tank and Manufac-
turing Company as an estimating
engineer.

The Baccalaureate Services were
held at 1 1 a.m. in the Oglethorpe Au-
ditorium. Reverend John J. Cotter,
principal of St. Pius High School de-
livered the Baccalaureate Sermon.
Father Cotter is an Oglethorpe trustee.
