The Era of the
Beginning

John Wayne taming the West almost
singlehandedly with his gun and his whip;
Daniel Boone killing a bear at the age of
three these are the heroes of yester-
year, heroes whose major qualities were
brute strength and whose heroism
depended on the number of bodies they
added to the church graveyard.

The heroes of today still tame the fron
tier, the frontier having changed from a
wilderness of land to a wilderness of
space; the qualities, from strength to
intellect: the method, from force to love.
Martin Luther King, Henry Kissinger
Hank Aaron, John F. Kennedy all
these heroes of today fight for the right
but their weapons are intellect, knowl
edge, and love. What qualities will char-
acterize the heroes of tomorrow? What
weapons ?

The bomb and brotherhood cannot
coexist. It is up to us to decide whether
this will be the beginning of the end or
the end of the beginning.

Frustrations and Follies

of Fall

Re-adjusting to the sound

of the alarm clock, a schedule
that must be changed twice,
homework, detention, the

Monday morning blues, the

routine of it all These drudgeries
of fall are varied

by a menagerie of fun and thrills:
the Powder Puff football

game in which the Class of '75
took its second victory,

the car smash designed to

let the mighty Patriots smash

the Richmond Academy Musketeers for a quarter
a blow, and the excitement of

the annual Georgia State

Movin O_ 7

Through rain or sleet, snow or hail, one problem remains for South-
west students at 8:00 am on Mondays through Fridays transporta-
tion to school. The less inspired take the easy way and drive a car or
motorcycle while the hardier souls either hoof it or peddle the ole ten-
speed 131/2 miles to school. Other students set their alarm clocks for
7:30 so that they can catch a bus at 7:35 and work on homework all
the way to school. Still the most independent of all students doesn't
worry about transportation. He sets his alarm clock for 7:45, promptly
awakes at that time, and states, Heck no | won't go!"' then turns
back over and falls asleep thus ending the next problem of a South-
west student, How on earth am | gonna get home!

and Ahead

Several new activities and organizations were begun or
revived during 1975.

For the first time in many years a bonfire was sponsored by
Student Council. Though the turnout was light, those who came
enjoyed the entertainment by the band and cheerleaders and the
crackling of the autumn fire.

After not having a school paper for a year, the SOUTHWEST
PATRI-ARTICLE came as a welcome provider of news and events
relating to our school and community. The newspaper staff,
although new and inexperienced, did an excellent job of provid-
ing quarterly news during the year.

The wall at Willingham B received a spring spruceup when
Willingham B Art classes completely repainted it with a mural
depicting important events in American History, an appropriate
theme for the upcoming Bicentennial.

For the first time in the history of our school, co-ed lunch
breaks were allowed throughout the year. Many students
enjoyed the new freedom of seeing friends from other buildings
and the chance to break the monotony of being indoors all day.

After years of meetings, planning, and money raising projects,
1975 finally saw the construction of steps on the hill of the soc-
cer field. A fence was also erected and the field is being graded
and planted with grass in hopes of eliminating the mud and other
difficulties encountered by students traveling between buildings
for classes.

All of these changes are helping to provide a new face for
Southwest; however, none will affect its future more than the
transition to the quarter system. Beginning in the Fall of 75, the
Quarter System will provide a much larger variety of subjects
and it should continue to keep Southwest on the move.

Recipe for a Spirit Happening

Emcee spiced with vitality and enthusiasm.
Overstuffed characters for Detective Fat (easily
peeled for the strip)

Tantalizing Beauty Contestants complete with

bathing suits and wigs
1 Soap opera well soaked in suspense
6 T.V. shows of various flavors.

Mix together in one large gym. Sprinkle with
songs, limericks, and commercials. Add a pinch of
riskee and serve hot to the best Patriots at South-
west, those who bought an annual. For an extra
touch, cover with spirit-filled Seniors. They bought
more annuals than the Juniors or Sophomores and
were awarded the Spirit Jug.

Because enough annuals were not purchased by
the students, the Annual Staff, determined to do
anything within their power to save the SPIRIT OF
'75, organized the Spirit Sprint. This project was a
15 mile Walk-A-Thon designed to raise money to
aid in the completion of the yearbook. Annual Staff
members, and 20 other chosen students began
early Saturday morning, March 8, at Riverside
Drive-In and ended the 15 mile trek at the editor's
home where a cookout was held. Sore muscles, blis-
tered feet, and almost 1,600 dollars resulted for
a cause that, at least for a portion of Southwest stu-
dents, is an important part of high school life.

What That Staff Won't
Do to Sell an Annual!

Involvement:

the Weapon

Against Apathy

Each year during October, American Edu-
cation Week is observed. This year its theme,
Getting Involved, was exemplified by at least
two groups in the school. In assemblies, a
brief history of American Education Week
was given, then the audience was treated to a
variety of dances, both foreign and nostalgic.

The Spanish Department provided an
insight into Spanish culture through dances
such as the Ramba, the Mexican Hat Dance;
and through popular songs sung in Spanish.
The Annual Staff delighted the audience with
glimpses of past eras in music, from the 40's
to the 70's, from Shirley Temple to Chubby
Checker to Mac Davis. The purpose of this skit
was to prove that a yearbook can serve as a
memory of YOUR generation in years to
come.

Annual Homecoming Festivities were brought to a close at the
Southwest-Richmond encounter at Henderson Stadium. Halftime
added a spark of beauty to the crisp autumn night as Debbie Zeagler
was crowned Homecoming Queen while the band played an appropri-
ate song by Chicago, Just You And Me." As the game drew near its
end, the crowd was eagerly cheering Chip Sanders on, hoping he
would break the school rushing record in the final game of the season.
Chip broke the record, but the Patriots lost to Richmond by a score of
49-26. With tears streaming down many faces, the fans left the stands
far less excited than they had arrived. Everyone soon forgot the
agony of losing, however, when they became involved in the fun at
the Homecoming Dance: Tomorrow Is Ours. The Scorpions provided
the music for the well-attended dance that closed out Homecoming
Week for another year.

Practice does make perfect as the Seniors demonstrated by winning
the Spirit Stick again this year. The uncanny timing with which the
entire class cut its voice at the downward swing of the Spirit Stick actu-
ally won it for them. The class spirit exhibited by the volume of sound
as well as the quantity and quality of their signs cinched the prize.

Betore Christmas

Twas the week before Christmas and all through Southwest,
Students were scurrying about with spirit-filled zest.

The trees were made ready, the doors were prepared;

All special activities showed Patriots cared.

The parade was complete with marchers and floats.
Cards from building to building bore holiday notes.
The students partied and oh what a sham!

That Christmas assembly and Santa Willingham.
All in all "twas a season of good will and cheer.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good year!

short, Love that's what life is all about.

Pride, Pep, and Patriotism

Both students and faculty enjoyed the various assemblies geared toward
education, inspiration and entertainment. Whether exhibiting pride in South-
wests undefeated basketball team, witnessing the thought-provoking and
informative assemblies of the High Flight Program and Max Cleland, or simply
bursting into laughter as the Naval Corps whistled all contributed to the
school life of Southwest '75.

Spring Fling provided a frivolous diversion for the students who
enjoyed a sack lunch picnic, a hilarious bike race in which the prin-
cipals and faculty peddled toward stardust, and a tug of war in
which representatives of each class demonstrated their prowess.
This event, though entertaining to those involved, served a worth-
while purpose since the sizeable profit was donated to Gracewood

Hospital in Atlanta.

Activities from concerts to eating occupy the leisure time of Macon teenag-

ers. Several well known entertainers performed at the Coliseum this year,
among them Elvis Presley, who gave a sellout performance, Wet Willie, and
John Denver, who both did outstanding jobs in presenting two completely dif-
ferent styles of music. Middle Georgians also enjoyed a refreshing treat of out-
door family fun at the annual Georgia Jubilee sponsored by the Jaycees.
Among its attractions were art exhibits, Barber Shop Quartets, Ocmulgee River
rides, and the ascension of a hot air balloon. In affiliation with the Billy Graham
Association, evangelist Leighton Ford was in Macon for an eight day Reach-Out
campaign, an event inspiring spiritual renewal and Christian fellowship. When it
comes down to a spur-of-the-moment-let's-go-do-something situation there may
not be a pre-planned event to attend, but there are lots of activities for kids to
do such as an invigorating game of bowling, putt-putt, a cool swim at the neigh-
borhood pool, or, if all else fails, that favorite all-American pastime . . . eat-
ing!

Counselors

Whether students need assistance in choosing school courses, whether
they desire advice in deciding which college to attend, or whether they need

This year the music department has received many honors, including a

Art and Cosmetology

A Spring day in Washington Park culminated a year of varied artistic
endeavors by the Southwest art department. Macrame, pottery, painting,
weaving tie-die, and batiking, all created by Southwest students, were on
display. McEvoy art classes also furnished the backdrop for the Junior-Sen-
ior, while Willingham students portrayed a panorama of American history
on the wall and landscaped the entrance to the office.

Cosmetology offered students a vocational choice. Hours earned during
this course actually count toward those necessary to achieve a license. Some
students supplement their hours, take the state board, and emerge from
Southwest ready to make a living in the field of cosmetology. To demon-
strate the skills, techniques and creative aspects of their chosen course of
study, these classes staged an assembly program for the student body
depicting hair styles from several eras.

CHARGERS 44 PATRIOTS O

Patriot spirit was higher for this game than
for any other game of the season. Cries of
Squeeze the Orange" echoed throughout
the packed Southwest stands for the first 30
minutes of the game, but these shouts quickly
changed to Defense! Defense!" as the game
progressed. The Patriots kept trying every
defense they knew, but Central blocked all
Southwest's attempts to score. Meanwhile the
Chargers capitalized on all Patriots mistakes
and ran for 6 touchdowns, winning the game

easily.

SOUTHWEST 26 NORTHEAST 6

One of the most rewarding games of the season was the Southwest-Northeast encounter.
Competition between the schools was scarce, since the Patriots led throughout the game. The
Southwest team was at its peak, looking impressive on both offense and defense. During the
first half, Southwest scored enough touchdowns to win the game. The second half of the game
merely added to the victory sweetness, giving the Patriots a thrilling win over the Northeast
Raiders.

IF AT FIRST YOU DONT SUCCEED . . . In one of the most exciting games of the
season the Patriots fell to their cross-town rivals, the Northeast Raiders. In a fast
moving contest that changed leads several times, the Patriots came out on the bot-
tom of a startling defeat by the ever-tough Northeast Raiders. The Patriots led by
one point with four seconds left in the game. As the Raiders hit another jump-shot,
adding two points, the buzzer sounded ending the game. The agony of defeat
could be seen on everyone's face, but there was also the anticipation of what was
to come. . . TRY, TRY AGAIN. . . In the Coliseum before a capacity crowd of
7,500 excited fans, the Patriots blew the Northeast Raiders off the court. The Patri-
ots surprised the Raiders with a fullcourt press in the early going to capture a quick
14-0 lead. Throughout the game the Patriots, headed by Coach Richardson and
Assistant Coach Johnson, combined great coaching with terrific ball playing to
diminish the Northeast Raiders. As the game neared its end, cries of we want a
hundred" rose loud and clear from the Southwest fans. We didn't hit the century
mark, but that didn't dampen the spirits of the jubilant Patriots for it was this win
that captured the sub-region title with a 5-1 mark. . . WE DID IT!

When you combine determination, talent, spirited
fans, great coaching, a little luck, and a lot of hard
work you come out with sweet success. And that's
exactly what our Lady Patriots did in their first encoun-
ter with the Northeast Lady Raiders. A fast moving,
close game saw the Lady Patriots claim victory by one
point in the final seconds. The memory of the first win
sent us into the second game with great expectations.
Leading at the half, the Patriots expected a repeat of
their first performance. The last two quarters, however,
saw the tide turn and the Lady Patriots left the Colli-
seum in disappointment after a 51 to 40 loss.

Patriots Parliament

ee ;

To prepare for the upcoming school year, twelve members of Patri-
ots Parliament attended a six day leadership workshop during the
summer at Berry College in Rome, Ga. The week that teachers
returned to school in August, student council also returned to put up
bulletin boards, plan opening week activities and give a faculty tea.
Early in the year student council and the annual staff co-sponsored the
Powder Puff Football Game and Mr. Southwest dance. Pep Rallies,
Homecoming Week, Goofy Goblin Week and Spring Fling Week were
all planned, sponsored, conducted and cleaned up after by student
council. This year, for the first time, student council entered a float in
the local Christmas Parade. The theme of the float, Make Your Dol-
lars Work For You," was centered around the energy crisis. Through-
out the year, student council coordinated the organization of clubs,
the activity schedule and the student activities calendar. A student
council workshop with Mr. Phil Gugliuzzsi was held for student council
officers and representatives of Southwest student council, which
served as sixth district coordinators. During the Christmas Season, a
variety of activities were sponsored by Student Council. Gifts and
cards were sent to patients in nursing homes, canned goods were col-
lected for the custodians, and many articles such as food and clothing
were sent to a needy family in Macon. On February 14th, valentines
were exchanged between McEvoy and Willingham, and individuals
bought and sent cards to friends and lovers in other buildings. These
and other similar activities make student council one of the most active
organizations on campus.

The organization which produced the Southwest PATRI-ARTICLE and
worked extremely hard to make it a success was the newspaper staff. By
first staging a Paint-a-Pator Tator Can subscription drive, the staff kindled
interest once more in a school newspaper. Then the Name the Newspa-
per Contest involved students more thoroughly, allowing them to have a
voice in the newspaper.

All through the year, members of the staff worked to meet deadlines,

to represent all facets of student life and activities at Southwest, and to

produce three quality newspapers.

Several new sections in the newspaper helped to make it a success:
Student Focus, a close-up on Southwest's outstanding students; Pat's
Rap, a column to voice student opinions; and Dear Patty Patriot, a per-
sonal Dear Abby" column. These things combined with the spirit of the
staff, the cooperation of Southwest students, and the determination of
the advisor, Mrs. Ella Carter, helped to make this year's Southwest
PATRI-ARTICLE a newspaper that students will remember.

Civinettes

Civinettes sponsored many projects this
year, again showing their school spirit.
Their first money-making project was the
fruit cake sale, followed by the collection
of money for UNICEF and Muscular Dys-
trophy, as well as a Rocking Chair Rock-A-
Thon for Muscular Dystrophy. The club
was in charge of organizing school locks
for distribution and of taking up books at
the end of the year. Members painted the

soccer field trash cans, cleaned up the soc-
cer field, painted rocks for teachers gifts
at Christmas, and collected canned goods
at Thanksgiving and Christmas for the
Welfare Department. They made a tele-
phone survey of graduated seniors to
determine the average vocation after leav-
ing high school and attended district meet-
ings in Warner Robins, Perry, and Macon.

Civitan Club

The Civitan Club worked not only for their
school but for the community as well. At
school, Civitan members worked on improv-
ing the grounds by planting various shrubs
and on improving the building itself by paint-
ing classrooms. They put up bulletin boards,
purchased supplies for the English Depart-
ment and Library, and processed text books
for the school. The club also assisted with
Open House, hosted a District Training Con-
ference, hosted a hospitality room for the
coaches, operated a concession stand for the
wrestling tournament, provided drapes for
the lunchroom, and raised funds to assist in
payment of the Willingham B lunchroom air-
conditioning.

In community work, Civitans assisted with
the following projects: the Walk-A-Thon for
the March of Dimes, food for the needy, a
Bike-A-Thon for Muscular Dystrophy, the
Heart Fund, and the Blood Bank. The mentally
retarded and crippled children were other
groups assisted by the Civitan Club.

The office, guidance, and media center assistants render
an invaluable service to Southwest by devoting their time to
carrying out small, tedious tasks so that school personnel
may attend to more important duties. The students volunteer
the time during which they would normally have a study hall
and work constantly at their tasks, thus giving the school a
more efficient manner of carrying out its business.

The Food Service members
delighted staff and students of
McEvoy B all year long with
superb concoctions. The group
supplied teachers with plates of
food periodically, but the biggest

was the one cooked for the VOT

Throughout the academic
year, the members of the South-
west Christian Association lis-
tened to a variety of speakers,
from local pastors to students
from the school. Special music
was also performed by people
such as Hubert Wheeler, Minister
of Music at Mable White Baptist
Church and by groups like Day

CVAE-VOCA were extremely busy clubs
all year, beginning their projects by paint-

holding a banquet, and entering a public-
speaking contest. Later they sponsored
arts and crafts projects, a CVAE yearbook,
a talent contest, an Outstanding Boy and
Girl'' contest, a spelling contest, and
school and community projects.

The League of Future Women Voters learned more about the coming
quarter system and the purposes of dedicated women in society by listening
to speakers throughout the year. Mrs. Karen Shockley spoke on the changes
the quarter system will bring to Southwest. The Vice-President of the League

Literary Club

Literary Club sells SOUTHWEST SEREN-
DIPITY, a literary magazine compiled of
poems, essays, and short stories submitted
from students in all four buildings. The club
printed two issues during the school year, the
first in February and the second toward the
end of school. All of the issues printed were
sold, compensating for the necessary weekly
meetings the club held to meet deadlines.

Science Club be

The Science Club's major project during the school year was the plan-
ning and hosting of Southwest's annual Science Fair on February 20,
1975 in which over 100 members participated. Science Club members set
up all tables for the projects and provided refreshments for those who
attended the fair.

The club selected Ecology as its theme this year and, to carry out the [i
theme, visited the Okefenokee Swamp, the Fernbank Science Center,
and the Museum of Arts and Sciences.

The Social Studies Club concentrated
most of its efforts on a helpful school pro-

Drum Major Greg Hollis

The Southwest Band, one of the busiest organ-
izations on campus, started their year during the
summer as the majorettes, flag twirlers, and
band members attended special camps. When
football season arrived, the Marching Patriots
devoted much time to preparing music for the
half-time shows at the nine games which the
band attended. During this time the band also
played at football pep rallies and at the Georgia
Tech Band Day.

Football season was followed by a hectic
Christmas schedule as the band marched in the
Macon and Warner Robins parades and per-
formed at Westgate shopping center and at
school. The next two months were spent in prep-
aration for the annual band and chorus festival,
which Southwest hosted. The time and effort
spent in preparing for this festival paid off as the
band received a Number One rating of Superior.

With spring came additional performances in
parades at the Middle Georgia Raceway and
Middle Georgia College, terminating with the
Saint Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah.

Whether skipping down the path to
the old general store to buy a new pair of
overalls for working on the farm or driv-
ing up the street to a favorite conven-
ience store for a few groceries, whether
making that Saturday morning trip into
town to buy cow feed and the next
month's staple goods or rushing to the
shopping center to fight for bargain spe-
cials, the business world is a major part of
everyone's life. It is a result of America's
free enterprise system, which has been
growing for the past 200 years.

Only if we patronize our businesses will
they be here to serve us in the future as
they have in the past. Will the big corpo-
ration swallow the small independent
businessman? That is a question to be
answered in the future, for this is only the
end of the beginning.
