We, the Wildcat Staff, take pride in presenting to you
the 1965 edition of the Wildcat. Within these covers
are glimpses caught here and there, so that in years
to come memories of the "good ole days at Peter
Appling High School will not be forgotten, The
candid shots revealed in this book are yours, You
made them; we preserved them,
- Departing we leave behind us footprints on the
400 of time."
"May this year's Wildcat be a constant and pleasant re-
minder of the bonds which exist between you and your
friends as well as you and your Alma Mater.....

Because of his untiring efforts and his sin-
cere interest in the youth of our comm nity, the
yearbook staff has dedicated "The Wildcat" to
Mr. J. L. Early, Athletic Director of Peter G,
Appling High School,
After receiving his basic training at Fort
Hill School, presently, M.M, Burdell, and Hud-
son High Industrial School, he furthered his edu-
cation at Georgia Baptist College and the Fort
Valley State College where he received a B.S,
degree in Health and Physical Education, In his
quest for knowledge, he studied at Mercer Uni-
versity and the graduate division of the Fort
Valley State College where he is pursuing a
Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling.
Love of youth has always been evident in
Mr. Early's life, for even as a student, he helped
with the athletic activities of his school and af-
ter graduating, coached the basketball and foot-
ball teams of his Alma Mater.
Of his many activities, participation in the
activities of his church take precedence, Asa
member of Grey's Chapel A.M.E. Church, he
has served as superintendent of the Sunday
School for eighteen years and is a member of
the Stewart and Trustee Boards, clerk of the
church, class leader, layman of the East Macon
District, and layman of the Macon, Georgia
Conference.
His contribution of more than thirty years
in scouting and coaching has awarded him
numerous citations, locally and state-wide,
Serving as director of Grey's Hill Municipal Pool for fourteen years, he is widely known and well-liked by the
citizens of this community.
Teaching First Aid for the National American Red Cross, working with the National Foundation for the March
of Dimes, serving as Commissioner of officials and Corresponding Secretary of the Georgia Interscholastic Asso-
ciation for district four, and membership in the Southern Coaches and Official Association, acclaim his leisure
hours.
Fraternal and social organizations are a part of his active life. He is a thirty-third degree Mason of the
F,&A.M, Central City Lodge Number twelve, and past president of Monseiur Et Madame Social and Civic Club of
Macon,
It is because of the fulness of Mr. Early's life and his community wide service, that we dedicate this book to
him, with hopes that many will be inspired by his zealousness and emulate his active life,
GREETINGS
As usual itis a sincere pleasure for me to greet you in
the edition of the school annual, and to share in the reminis-
cences of your high school d
You ist consider yourselves fortunate to have reached
this level of achievement in your lives since some two hun-
dred and fifty students who entered Appling High School with
you in 1960 are no longer counted among your ranks. Yet, I
challenge all of you who remain to prepare yourselves to en-
ter the doors of opportunity now opened to you and leave
those doors confidentially prepared as a credit to yourselves,
your school, your state, and to your nation.
I specifically encourage those of you who are capable
and interested to pursue careers in medicine and dentistry,
and then intently reflect upon filling in the vast vaccum that
is being created in this section of Georgia. We must attempt
in some way to relieve this condition where there is a scarcity
or inadequate number of prepared people in the medical pro-
fession to serve over forty thousand people. The challenge is
great and the rewards are even greater.
This age in which you now live demands of you the
highest principles and ideals that you have learned in school
and church, Hence, when the days of reflection are upon
you, it may be recalled, "I was challenged, I accepted, and
now I serve my fellowmen in humility, in dignity, and in honor. No greater reward can I ever receive than to be
able to say that I served my people well.
As the years advance, and as you review the 1965 edition of "THE WILDCAT" the faculty and I trust that you
will have realized some of your dreams, and that all of you will be able to identify each of your classmates as
responsible contributing members to society rather than liabilities,

The Student Teacher. .
"Student Teaching is a job which involves
ch knowledge, much perservance and much
nore patience, It is not easy for a college stu-
dent to step out of the classroom and immedi-
ately take charge of 30 or 40 elementary or
high school students, But this is exactly what a
student teacher must do, He must be prepared
to face any problem and come up with a so-
lution- a good solution, He must be prepared to
take full responsibility which is soon to come,
But, of course, there is the time to look forward
to when the title "student teacher" is exchanged
for "TEACHER," and one realizes that all the
work has been well worth the reward."
The Supervising Teacher.....
"The supervising teacher is Billy Graham,
Emily Post, and Lassie, blended into one, Like
Billy, he is a model teacher; like Emily, he
knows the right thing to do at the right time;
like Lassie, he listens, understands, and loves,
To the student teacher he is a storehouse of
teaching tricks. He can operate the most obsti-
nate mimeograph machine, can remember the
most helpful data on students, and make the

most difficult record-keeping system seem
simple. Too, he has discovered not only how to
evaluate and where to observe, but also which is
the shortest route to the cafeteria,
*
His shoulders are straight with the pride of .
his profession; yet they are wonderfully soft to Mrs
cry on, His handshake is reassuring. His "know-
how and his wealth of ideas and materials,
coupled with his willingness to share, mold him
into that priceless commodity, the friend,
. Anna Colbert

With a guiding hand he suggests, criticizes,
helps, At times he deliberately allows his stu-
dent teacher to make mistakes, But even then,
the reason for such actions is obvious; for, in
addition to being a friend, he bears also the
equally important title - TEACHER,"

An opportunity to learn is the birthright
of every American child, a promise ful-
filled by our public schools.
The creation of these schools is a stir-
ring epoch of our national life,
Each day the American flag along with - ++ 4n National Economic Growth
the United States and Georgia flags were
. in Better Communities flown, each class submitted Education
Week Posters depicting some phase of
the national theme,
Bulletin boards were decorated appro-
priately. Each class designed invita-
tions to send to parents. Many parents
responded to this invitation and came
out to witness our open house and chapel
program.
A schedule was worked out in order that
groups of students could attend various
lectures held in the library each day
during the week.
. in Good Citizenship
To climax the week, pastor J. Paul Monk,
. in Personal Fullfillment the. efficient pastor of the Spring Street
Tabernacle Church, brought a most in-
spirational and dynamic message to the
Faculty and Student body.
Mrs, M, D. Fonvielle served as general
chairman of all activities,

On Thursday October 22, 1964, we were honored with the appear-
ance of "The Aristocrat of Bands", nationally famous Tennessee A.
and I, State University Marching Band.
The band is noted for performing intricate dance steps while
playing equally difficult music.
To this group: the band members, directors, and chaperons, words
of gratitude and sincere thanks can not be adequately expressed to you
for the entertainment particularly favored by the performance of your
superior-rated college marching band.
The Macon public gratefully received the Tennessee Band and
welcome your return.
