Democracy demands more of us than any other system in education, character,
self-restraint, and self-discipline. How are we going to get the best education
in the world? One of the best ways is to have the best trained teachers...
Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education, The
human mind is our fundamental resource,

A

These are some of the lessons of the past, of this great man, which America's teach-
ers may offer to those who must create the future, With the national emblem again
hoisted to the very top of the flagpoles before all the schools of this nation, let it be re-
membered that a people soundly educated, every child, not according to his means or
his race, but according to his capacity, are our late President's most appropriate and
enduring memorial,

Mrs. G, B, Holbrook

In memory of Mrs. G, B. Holbrook, whose deep devotion and un-
tiring efforts made our experiences together more meaningful,

Many of us have profited from her guidance during her teaching
career which lasted more than twenty years,

Mrs, Holbrook passed after a lengthy illness on September 18,
1963,

May the ideals she cherished remain with us and the memory of
her life never fade,

IN RECOGNITION

RECIPIENT OF MCKIBBEN LANE AWARD
1963

For profiency and excellence in teaching, Mrs, Retha Walker Simms received the McKibben Lane Award for
1963, Mrs, Simms, a native of Bibb County and the daughter of Mrs, Louise Walker, is a teacher of World His-
tory and Geography at the P, G. Appling High School; and at the time this award was received, her teaching
experience, as teacher and principal in Bibb and surrounding counties, totals 38 years, Professionally, she is the
possessor of two academic degrees; namely, the Bachelor of Science degree, Fort Valley State College, and the
degree of Master of Arts, Atlanta University. Mrs, Simms has also toured the West Coast, and has done further
study,

This annual presentation to a selected teacher of the Bibb County School System is made possible by the
family of the late Judge McKibben Lane, a former member of the Bibb County Board of Education.

The Appling family rejoices with the honoree, and the Yearbook Staff reserves this space as another con-
gratulatory gesture to this teacher of merit.

Another First For Appling

In every niche of society there are individuals who are worthy of our praise and
admiration for jobs well done, Specifically we pause to laud the most recent
achievement of Bennie Mathew Stephens who is one among the first students of color
to enter Mercer University,

Bennie is the grandson of Mrs, Vonia Howard, While a student at Appling, he
was the recipient of numerous awards honoring him for high scholastic achievements.
Among these was an early admission scholarship to Morehouse College as an acceler-
ated student and as an alternate candidate for the United States Air Force Academy.

Bennie is respected and admired by all for his keen sense of humor and ability
to settle down to do a job well, This is shown by the fact that he was valedictorian
of his class and maintained an accululative academic average of above 95 for his
high school career,

Best wishes Bennie! May you continue to climb the stairway of success,
