THE
1963
EDITION
DEDICATION
FOREWORD
IN THESE PAGES, WE, THE MEMBERS
OF THE SENIOR CLASS, HAVE TRIED
TO RECAPTURE THE GOLDEN MEMOR-
IES THAT HAVE BOUND OUR HEARTS,
MOLDED OUR CHARACTERS, AND EN-
RICHED OUR MINDS,
WE SHALL ALWAYS SEE IN THE PIC-
TURES AND WORDS OF THIS BOOK THE
COUNTLESS HOURS WE SPENT IN STUDY,
IN WORK, AND IN RECREATION.
WE KNOW, TO A STRANGER, THIS
BOOK MIGHT BE MERELY A SERIES OF
MEANINGLESS PICTURES AND WORDS.
YET, TO THE CLASS OF 1963 THE AC-
TIVITIES RECORDED HEREIN WILL AL-
WAYS RADIATE WARMTH AND RECALI
CHERISHED MEMORIES FOR YEARS TO
COME,
Greetings:
It is indeed a pleasure for me to greet you in this fourth annual record of activities at Appling
I ligh School.
Of the three hundred seven students entering the eighth grade in September 1958, only ninety-
& Ss S I ; ?
nine are members of the present senior class. This senior class has the distinct honor of being the class
to receive five years of high school work at Appling.
In this age of "tensions", "crises", communication satelites, and space explorations, I shall like
to challenge each prospective graduate to establish a set of goals for his future and work diligently to-
ward achieving them. I certainly hope that your formal education will not terminate upon graduation
from high school, for a mere high school education cannot adequately equip you to meet the challenges
of the times. Hence, I wish to impress upon each of you to continue your education in some way in
order that you can become functional, contributing citizens of this society.
My congratulations are extended to the unique presentation of this record Appling history, for as
you reminisce in future years over your high school days, this record will certainly bring warmth as you
Marrs B, Pooreppren
renew acquaintances with old friends and teachers.

MRS. S. J. MATHIS
Mrs. S. J. Mathis is a native of Macon, Georgia and
an instructor of P, G, Appling High School, Mrs. Mathis
is the charming wife of Mr. Ulysses Mathis and mother
of one daughter, Ursula. She holds a B, S, Degree in
Business Education from the Fort Valley State College.
We the Editoral Staff of 1962-1963 consider Mrs,
Mathis an assiduous person, She is one of the few mem-
bers of the faculty who has close contact with almost
every senior, To many, she stands as a personification of
the strength, dignity, generosity and practicality that
must characterize any definition of Appling High. Mrs.
Mathis represents a vital force which expresses itself at
both the administrative and personal levels of high
school life.
It is in this respect and not merely in that of long
and devoted service --that we are giving recognition to
Mrs. S. J. Mathis.
