Claudia Giacchero and Norval Garnier
attended Central during winter quarter as
participants in the Open Door Student
Exchange program.

Norval, from San Jose, Costa Rica, stayed
with Jeff DeHart, his temporary brother.
This was Norvals second experience as an
exchange student in the United States, his
previous stay being in Seattle, Washington.
Norval has had ten years of English lessons,

including four years of private tutoring.

Claudia is a pretty sixteen-year-old girl from
Santiago, Chile who has stayed with the
family of Angela Gates. Claudia has had seven
years of English, but still does not understand
much conversational English since her study
has been primarily in grammar.

During February Claudia and
Norval visited in many classrooms,
explaining to our students the
similarities and differences between
their countries and ours.

ORANGE The Central Chargers and their new Coach Tom Simonton made

IN their 1979 debut with a 37-13 victory over Baldwin County in a
Region 4AAAA game played at Porter Stadium.
Coach Simonton watched as his team scored three touchdowns in
ACTION the first half and two more in the third quarter.
Led by Eric Manson who carried the ball 22 times for 86 yards,
the Chargers churned out 227 yards on the ground. Quarterback
David Norwood hit four out of eight in the passing department for
77 yards and two touchdowns and ran 13 yards for another.
Taking advantage of an early Baldwin fumble and scoring against
their team six times, this years game took on some of the
characteristics of a re-run from the 1978 season.

Westsides Patriots took advantage of
two Central errors in the fourth period to
down the Chargers in their second game
of the season.

The Chargers led 7-0 going into the
final quarter when a bad punt went out of
bounds at the Charger 30 and was
followed by a Charger fumble on their 29.

With six seconds left in the ball game
and with the Chargers moving ahead, the
clock ran out for Central before they
could score.

Central has a good football team. They took
advantage of our mistakes and we didnt take
advantage of theirs. Thus Coach Randy Hatcher
conceded defeat as the Raiders fell 16-6 to a team
they have never beaten.

In Augusta for their fourth game, Central
dropped a 20-7 decision to Butler Countys
Bulldogs. The Chargers managed to score their
only touchdown in the second quarter when David
Norwoods 3-yard run capped a 58-yard drive
following a fumble recovery.

In their fifth game the Chargers lost to
Evans 14-7. The only Charger touchdown
came in the first quarter when Marcus Lewis
ran a 15-yard counterplay up the middle of the
field. The extra point made the score 7-0.
Tailback Eric Manson had an 84-yard
touchdown run called back because of a
personal foul on the Chargers.

In an even battle, the chargers tied Lucy
Laney of Augusta with a score of 7-7. The
tying touchdown was scored by Eric Manson
when Centrals defense hit Laneys
quarterback as he released a pass and Virgil
Coley intercepted 25 yards away from another
score.

On October 19 the Chargers played their
hearts out in an effort to defeat the Warner
Robins Demons. Twenty-one points behind
after half time, Charger C.L. Barnes grabbed a
loose ball on the Demon 8-yard line and raced
92 yards for the score. The Chargers second
touchdown came on a 35-yard run after a pass
interception by Rochell Smith. This loss
dropped the chargers record to 2-4 overall
and 2-3 regional.

Following the opening kickoff, the Chargers
drove with apparent ease from their own 34 to the
two yard line of Robert E. Lees Rebels. Charger
quarterback David Norwood initiated the drive
with a 27 yard run that put the Chargers at Lees
34. Marcus Lewis followed with a 23 yard run
placing the Chargers at Lees eight. But the Rebel
defense held Central at the two and Kelvin Oliver
scored Centrals only points for the night with a
20-yard field goal.

Losing 19-6 to crosstown rival Southwest,
Central fell to 2-6-1 and lost its bid for the city

championship.

It was a long time coming, but the
Central Chargers finally broke back
into the win column with a 21-13 victo-
ry over Richmond Academy in the fi-
nal game of the season.

It was an important win for us be-
cause well have something to build on
when we start spring practice next

year, said Coach Tom Simonton as the
"79 season closed.

Roger Burkett Randall Wilder

Centrals Wrestling Team returned from the State Tournament this year with four
individual champions and Second Place in the state for the team.

Roger Burkett and Randall Wilder were both named State Champs. Tony Mills placed
second and Isaac Hutchings was named to fourth place.

Wrestling at Central is a comparatively new sport and the participants have worked long
and hard to bring their team to the respected position that they have achieved.

Congratulations to Coach Plagge and the Team for their fine work.
