The Poet football team, while not winning
the State Championship, certainly proved to be
exceptional in spirit, ability, and sportsman-
ship. This team will long be remembered as the
team that overcame the seven year jinx of Wil-
lingham.
The team was paced throughout the season
by strong play from several sophomores and
juniors.
Even though the Poets finished with a 55
region |-AAA record, every team who went up
against Lanier came out knowing they had
played a truly great, hard-hitting team that
would never give up.

Lanier Sugar Bear Band
After a rigorous week of work in North Geor-
gias Camp Wasega, this years Sugarbears
returned to Macon and presented an outstanding
season of half-time shows ranging from Tiajuana
Brass to Batman. About mid-season the march-
ing band appeared in their new British style uni-
forms. At Homecoming the Lanier and Mark
Smith Bands performed in a joint half-time
show saluting the United Nations and furnishing
background music for the crowning of the Home-
oming Queen.
Football season was only the beginning of the
bands activities. A trip to the University of Geor-
gias Band Day, a Christmas Concert with the
Mabel White Baptist Choir, the State Music
Festival, a spring concert, and a concert tour
through South Georgia cities highlighted the
years many events.
The funds necessary to conduct these activities
were raised by the band members, majorettes,
and flag girls during numerous candy and cake
sales. The enthusiasm shown by the band wher-
ever it performed, whether at a pep rally or a
concert, best exemplified the true Sugarbear
spirit.

Basketball
Possibly the most balanced team that Lanier
has ever produced faced the toughest region 1-
AAA competition ever. This years squad, under
the guidance of Coach Henry Middlebrooks, al-
ways exerted pressure when pressure was needed
and presented a most exciting season. After an
excellent record of 22-5, the Poets journeyed to
the region tournament with hopes of playing in
the state tournament in Albany. Every team that
faced the Poet Five knew that they had played a
team with spirit plus. With eight players return-
ing, next years expectations are truly high.

Swimming
Swimming is a team sport, but each member
of the team remains a distinct and important in-
dividual. At the critical moment the swimmer
cannot count on luck or the wisdom of a coach
or the strength of a teammate to sustain him.
However good his team may be, in every race
Co-captains Jerry Beasley and Ernest Campbell
and on every relay leg, the individual competi-
tor must settle the issue solely on the basis of his
own merits. As he matches his rivals stroke for
stroke and as he tumbles in the silver fury of a
turn, he can count only on his own wits and
strength and determination.
Coach Tom Close
Baseball
With an outstanding crop of B-team and ninth
grade players, prospects for the 1966-67 season
are very encouraging. Good hitting and improved
fielding are expected to enable the team to defeat
strong competition. Experience and depth will be
supplied by returning players Benny Mayo, Den-
nis Davis, Brannon Bonifay, Bruce Bryant, and
Jimmy Allen.

Last years track team was the smallest, but
probably the most dedicated team ever produced
at Lanier. Steve Arrington, Billy Taylor, Bobby

years team. Outstanding track stars will repre-
sent Lanier in regional and state competition.
Increased interest and participation will be a great
asset to the team.

Golf
A relatively inexperienced team must face the
challenge of sustaining Laniers reputation of
producing the finest prep golfers in the southeast-

HOMECOMING
'66
A tense week began with the selection of ten
lovely candidates for Homecoming Queen. On
two occasions these candidates were introduced
to the Lanier student body. Anticipation and sus-
pense made the day of the big game with Mark
Smith pass slowly for these few, but finally night
fell and the long-awaited half-time arrived. On
the basis of her poise, personality, and charm,
Miss Monnie Agnew was honored with the title
of Homecoming Queen for 1966-67. Her court
consisted of Miss Mary McGaughey, Miss Shir-
ley Coleman, and Miss Carolyn Clancy. The oth-
er candidates included Miss Eugenia Griffith,
Miss Karen Lewis, Miss Gail Smith, Miss An-

GYM ACTIVITIES
Gym Actwities Create
Good Sportsmanship
Gym activities this year seemed to include al-
most everything from sponsoring the team which
won the city volleyball championship to crazy-
foaming the gym office. We could never forget
the expression on Miss Kellums face as she
looked at her foamy white desk or the dis-
tinguished faculty volleyball team losing a tough
battle (played mostly from the floor) to the spiri-
ted Junior champions who could not forget that
last year, when they were sophomores, the facul-
ty beat them. Also never to be forgotten were the
screams of joy which engulfed Lasseters gym
after Miller won the volleyball trophy. Gym ac-
tivities added variety and fun to a year of hard
work.

Dawn... Sunrise...
Beginnings . . .
Groping for maturity
Amid restraints ...
Encountering new experiences ...
Looking forward with optimism,
Yet uncertainty ...
Seeking acceptance ...
Searching for identity . . .
All these mark a beginning
Youth, conscious
Of the world around them.
Three years at Miller and Lanier .. .
A time of expansion .. .
A time of development . . .
The search for ideas .. .
The formation of concepts . . .
The strengthening of convictions .. .
A time that brings
The agony of perseverance ...
The pain of defeat ...
The exultation of triumph . . .
The sunshine of laughter . . .
The deepening of friendship .. .
The awakening of love .. .
GRADUATION
An end, yet a beginning
A time of retrospection
A time of anticipation
A hesitation
The end of many problems,
But the beginning of new endeavors,
New experiences, new aspirations
The end of some relationships,
But the beginning of new acquaintances,
New friendships, new loves
As we look back,
Tiny instants in time
Become the remembered reality
Of those high-school days
Vivid flashbacks of joy,
Of excitement, of anxiety,
Of despair, of hope
was the best of times
was the worst of times
was the age of wisdom
was the age of foolishness
was the spring of hope
was the winter of despair
was a time of Miller and Lanier
time now passed
A time of youth
But youth must mature
We must look forward
