FOREWORD
What are your impressions of Miller? When you think of Miller what comes to mind
a favorite teacher, the stately, old building, sunny days on the east terrace, Fun Night,
or a great feeling of pride in your school?
The 1964-1965 annual staff has tried to capture what it thinks are the impressions
of the student body. The flaming torch symbolizes not only Features and Fun, the
events to promote school spirit, but also Faces and Facts, the people who plan and take
part in school life
The staff hopes you will enjoy your annual as much as we enjoyed editing it. In the
future, even more than now, we hope you can see the significance of your high school
years.

No phase of school life can fail to feel the excitement of
a new trend ... and at LANIER the cadets are perceptive,
for from the Opening Assembly in September until the
final strains of Auld Lang Syne, they reacted as the modern
youth of today does when faced with new situations- -with
interest, cooperation, intelligence. and foresight. Academi-
cally, athletically, socially, and militarily, "65 was a different
year from any preceding it ... as long as youth faces its
role in a changing world, the USA need not fear for the
future ... it will be in good hands.

MR. PORTER SETS THE PACE
AT LANIER
During the summer of 63 Mr. Porter began to display just that
vigor needed to bring about a new trend at Lanierice water was made
available on each floor; a new laundry was installed in the gym to
provide fresh uniforms for all athletic teams; practice fields were
made ready; and there are plans for *65!
Then Mr. Porter turned his attention to the new developments in
mathematicsand every course was revamped. New math lab was
installed, new textbooks were ordered, and new techniques were em-
ployed in order to keep ahead of the high school requirements in
math courses. With vim and determination he consulted his science
teachers and made certain that new equipment was added.
Here is a principal who does indeed set the pacehe led Lanier
through a transitional periodhe keeps Lanier students on their toes
in the lunchroom he takes time to praise, reward, and advise his
boys and the facultyHere is the man who had set the pace for the
New Trends.

TRENDS
IN THE CLASSES
1965 will go down in Lanier history
As the year of fine student body
A student body which was seldom
Disgruntled, a student body which
Contained some of the finest boys
Who have ever attended Lanier.
Rapidly, old and new students fell
Into the spirit of Lanier in65.
There were fewer complaints,
More smiles, more signs of a happy
Group than there have been
In a long time.
These are the students of 65, the
Record breaking year when over
1200 students enrolled at Lanier.
These are the students who made
The academics, the athletics, the
Military and the organizations
Have quality in 65. These are the
Boys who worked together, played
Together and upheld the honor
Of their schooltogether.
Here are the students of 65 who
Formed close alliances and
Friendships which wont be
Forgotten, for they were based
On those intangibles in life
Which make people remember others
For the rest of their lives

TRENDS
IN MILITARY
In military schools, rank is as sought after
as any other attainment. With rew ard of
silver buttons as a goalclean uniforms,
brass shines, and good grades become a way
of life to those cadets who aim for the
heights.
Esprit de Corps becomes apparent when
companies compete for honors in the weekly
parade and in the intramural sports program.
Here are the cadets who live under a
military system, who learn the meaning of
leadership, and who develop into leaders as
the year progresses.

The 1964-1965 edition of the
Lanier High basketball team, un-
der the capable guidance of veter-
an coach Henry Middlebrooks,
compiled a magnificent 197 rec-
ord, the best of a Lanier team in
15 years. Finishing 5th in a state-
wide poll of AAA teams, the Poet
hardcourt men not only won the
Heart of Georgia Tournament, but
also captured four straight victo-
ries over crosstown rival Willing-
ham. The Lanier basketballers
have indeed set a trend we would
like to follow for many years to
come.
BASKETBALL
The Poets are shown below on their way to an unprece-
dented second straight triumph in the annual Heart of
Georgia Tournament. Lanier was victorious over Coch-
ran, 7159, and Northside, 6260, and climaxed the
tournament by trouncing Willingham in the finale.

Perhaps the most exciting game
of the year took place when the
Poets handed the LaGrange Gran-
gers their first loss of the year. Port-
er Gymnasium was in a state of
frency as the Poets came from be-
hind to deadlock the game at the
end of regulation play. Mere bed-
lam broke out as the Poets eased
by LaGrange, 5956, in overtime.
The 1964-1965 Poet cagers handed their crosstown rivals
four defeats, thus extending Laniers winning streak over
the Rams to nineteen. The Poets literally mopped the Rams
off the floor as they continued a Lanier tradition set many
years ago.

TANKMEN
SEASON
In our first full year of competition, this team has
moved from total insignificance to sixth place in Geor-
gia purely because of the determination, courage, and
spirit of its members. Records have been established
which will stand for many years. I only hope that more
boys will come out for swimming next year to help re-
place the large gaps our graduating seniors have left.

TRENDS
IN ORGANIZATIONS
Over thirty organizations were
spotlighted as they fun tioned throughout
the year.
Poet Leader deadlines
pressed staffers for time and Annual
staff members worked to meet
their deadlines, too.
History, science and language club members
acquired a deeper knowledge
in academic areas, while future farmers
profited from clubs espec ially
designed for them.
A new club was established as student
interest widened into the
fields of drama.
Enthusiasm and interest in the
school and its functions was encouraged
by the Pep Club.
Club advisors, officers and committees
worked to provide stimulating
programs, inviting speakers,
showing slides and other various projects.
The trend in 65 among the
organizations was towardQUALITY!
THE LANIER
ANNUAL STAFF
Putting together a yearbook is a pleasurable task. The result
touches each student, receiving varied opinions and many signa-
tures. From the time work began in the summer to the deadline in
spring, eleven minds directed blue pencils, page layouts and copy
thoughts for the copies to be printed. It is a taxing job at times to
find a variety of layouts to hold student interest. The strain of the
difficult moments aided the staff in meeting deadlines. Helping
hands and bright humor not only alleviated tension, but induced
unforgettable times. In spite of occasional parties and relaxed days,
the ever-present deadlines meant work, work every sixth period,
after school and occasionally on Saturdays and Sundays. As the
year slipped by the day of publication approached. Waiting for the
finished product, the editors worried. The pride and pleasure shared
was the real award for the years labor.
